Masonry 1- Syllabus

Course Description:

Masonry 2 is a one-year program that allows students to fine-tune their skills with concrete, block, brick, and ceramic tile. They complete various projects such as chimneys, fireplaces, sidewalks, and arches. They also learn repair and renovation work.

Stone masonry is included and prepares students to design and repair stone walls, fireplaces, sidewalks and entryways.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be prepared to perform all aspects of masonry and qualify for sponsored apprenticeship programs.

Students also study blueprint reading and learn how to complete estimates for labor and materials in regards to residential and commercial projects.

Goals/Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate skills in the field of masonry.

Grading:

Grading will follow the policy of Loudoun County Public Schools.

Evaluations:

Tests:

  • Written tests will be given at the end of each unit of study.
  • Practical tests will be given throughout various units.

Homework/Assignments/Projects:

  • Practical exercises to be completed at home, relevant to the masonry trade.
  • Daily performance evaluation during off-site projects.

Requirements:

Students are required to pass a safety test prior to working with tools and equipment.

They are also required to follow OSHA standards while working on off-site projects.

Format and Expectations:

Students enrolled in this class will fine-tune their skills in the field of masonry during classroom, laboratory exercises as well as off-site projects. A large percentage of time in the class is spent working on off-site projects around the county. Students are expected to follow all safety rules

during these times. Students are graded daily on their performance and safety throughout the day. Students are required to complete reading and assignments in both textbook, as well as written test.
