Welcome to Chemistry!

Chemistry students study what is happening “behind the scenes” in natural phenomena. Through hands-on, cooperative experiences in the laboratory and classroom, students construct microscopic explanations of macroscopic observations. Students gain a working understanding of the composition, structure, properties of matter and how matter changes to prepare them for college level chemistry.

Grades: view assignment completion and quarter grades on the “Powerschool” website.

✓  read Standards-Based Grading document for description of grading policy.

✓  learning target proficiency progress can be viewed on Active Grade. Students will be given a username and password.

Required Materials (BRING WITH YOU EVERYDAY)

✓  scientific calculator with log and exponential functions (you may not use your phone)

✓  3-ringed notebook with tabs labeled for units 1-5.

✓  composition notebook (provided by instructor)

Classroom Rules

✓  BE PROMPT: in your seat when the bell rings (not in seat = tardy). No food or drink in classroom.

✓  BE PREPARED: bring supplies, completed HW and positive attitude every day; read board for HW and instructions.

✓  BE PRODUCTIVE: stay on task. Follow teacher instructions. No heads down on desks. No

personal electronic devices visible .

✓  BE POLITE: language and actions must be appropriate and respectful.

✓  BE PROUD: only your own original work is acceptable.

Homework: essential practice for concepts and skills. Will be collected on a random basis.

Absences: your responsibility: check with other students or Chemistry webpage.

✓  schedule missed assessments and labs on your own time on the day you return.

Labs

✓  a signed lab safety contract must be on file for participation in lab activities.

✓  collecting data during labs is group work. Lab questions and write-ups are individual work.

✓  missed labs must be made up within 1 week of absence.

Academic integrity: All work turned in must be in your own words.

✓  Cheating is presenting the words or ideas of another as your own which includes

*copying another student’s work or allowing another student to copy your work

*copying or pasting work from the internet or other published material

✓  No credit will be given for work that is the same as another student’s work.

Assessments

✓  all cell phones will be turned off and placed in basket at front of room until all students have completed the assessment.

✓  please read Standards-Based Grading document for description of assessments.

Reassessments:

✓  may reassess unit learning targets before end of unit (only one RA/day and only 2 RA/week).

✓  must complete relearning and reflection assignment.

✓  sign up for reassessment at least 48 hours before day requested.

✓  no reassessments scheduled during the last week of the quarter.

✓  reassessment of unit tests: must be completed 1 week after test is handed back.

Tips for Success:

✓  Review often. There is too much new material in a chemistry course to learn it all the night before the test. Use the learning targets to focus your review on what you need to know.

✓  Practice, practice, practice. Redo skill worksheets until you have mastered the skill.

✓  Be an active listener during lectures, demos and labs. Ask questions.

✓  Take organized, detailed notes during lectures and demonstrations.

✓  Study with a friend. The best learning happens when you are explaining a concept to someone else.

✓  Ask for help early and often! Attend help sessions (Tuesday and Thursday after school) if you are struggling.
