UDINE

THE CITY IN THE HEART OF FRIULI

The city is located in the middle of the Friuli's plain and it's aproximately 20 km away from Slovenia and 54 km away from Austria. With its strategic position, Udine is in the intersection of the european routes towards North, South, East and West.

The city rises up on an high plain, around an isolated hill where, on the top, is located the castle; on the West side it's runned along the Cormor stream and on the East side it's runned along the Torre stream.

MEMORIALS

In the city, you'll be able to find different attractions:

  • Loggia del Lionello = public gotic-venetian style loggia that is exposed on Libertà Square. Built in 1457, after a firethat destroyed it in 1876, it's been restored by Andrea Scala. Most of the works that were in the inside are now preserved in the city museum.
  • The castle = majestic building that overlooks the hill and the entire city. After many reshuffles, it was terribly damaged with the 1511 earthquake. It shows a 15th roman appearance that makes it more similar to a noble residence than a military building. Other inside changes were generated during the next centuries to designate it for the various uses: jail, barracks. The castle, now, houses the Parliament of the Friuli's homeland that dates to the XII century is one of the oldests in Europe.
  • Loggia and San Giovanni temple = in front of the Loggia del Lionello are located the Loggia and San Giovanni temple, ercted in 1533 by the lombard architect Bernardino da Morcote. The church, in ancient times dedicated to San Giovanni, is now designated for the fallen. In the front of the Loggia del Lionello are even located the sculptures of Ercole and Caco, bestowed to Angelo de Putti.
  • Torre dell'Orologio = located on the inside of the Loggia of San Giovanni, was erected in 1527. On the top there are two sculptures who clap their hands dated 1852.
  • Duomo di Santa Maria Annunziata = built from the 1236 by hook of the patriarch. The building was finished 100 years later. Beside the Duomo it's located the bell tower with the baptistery.
  • Santa Maria di castello church = one of the most ancient churches, dates XII century and it's placed on the castle hill.
  • San Giacomo church = born as a chapel, it's been enlarged; it's situated in the ancient "erbe square", nowadays Matteotti Square, more known as San Giacomo Square. Next the square rises up the Cappella delle Anime built in 1744.
  • The Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine = biggest theatre of the city, entitled to the artist Giovanni da Udine, the building has been inaugurated on 18th october 1997. In addition to the orchestra, the theatre houses three galleries and has 1230 seats.

EVENTS

Every year Udine hosts many events concerning many typologies, starting from culinary to those more classy.

Among all those events that you can get on the website we've gathered the most peculiars and unique ones.

  • Friuli DOC : wine and food fair that every September reunites the traditional cuisine and typical products of the land of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
  • New year's Eve in the Square 1 Maggio= music, dance, fun and the inevitable fireworks show from the hill of the castle.
  • · Celebrations start at 22.00 with the music and entertainment that will accompany the audience for the whole evening till the countdown.
  • Far East Film: the Festival of the Cinema which rewards the film originated from the East.
  • Udine Antiqua: the handicraft's market and the used things shop(thrift shop) took from the "granny's attic" that is organized every 3rd Sunday of the month starting from January to December, unmissable for the enthusiast of antique trade, collecting and handicraft.

GASTRONOMY

You just can't miss the traditional udinese cuisine and overall the Friulan cuisine during your stay in the city!Here is the summary of the dishes with most success.

  • Salam tal aset = fresh ham cooked in the vinegar, generally with the onion, to be consumed preferably during winter with cornmeal mush(polenta).
  • Cjarsons = potato dumpling whose content changes according to the flair of the cook, they make up the first DOC dish, one-of-a-kind of these lands.
  • Muset e bruade = the muset is cotechino made mostly with the mouth of pork meanwhile the brovada are stripes of turnip left there to macerate and then cooked. It competes against the frico with polenta for his record for best Friulan dish for excellence.
  • Tiramisù: we conclude with the sweet internationally that recalls our lands.

SHOPPING IN UDINE

Udine, furthermore, has got many malls in addiction to the historical centre.These ones have been built recently and they are easily reachable with the infrastructures arranged by the city.
