James City County Parks and Recreation, Williamsburg, Virginia (Summer 2013)

Therapeutic Aide: Worked in an inclusion summer camp setting that was an extension of the before and after-school program. Responsible for a group of five children with disabilities such as autism, oppositional defiance disorder, and Asperger’s syndrome. Modeled and taught children social interaction skills. Focused on making activities inclusive for children. Communicated with a team of counselors and a CTRS about new observations and suggested changes on IEP plans.

Volunteer Experience

Special Olympics, Longwood University, Farmville, Virginia (February 2013)

Court Director: Directed gym during the regional basketball competition. Managed time appropriately for tournament style of play. Assisted in organization of referees, score keepers and other volunteers.

Facilitation Techniques: Assist children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities in an aquatic setting. Help individuals to increase social, swimming, behavioral, and safety skills. Work with individuals to meet IEP goals by the end of the semester.

Leisure Education: Taught children in an afterschool program the leisure activity of origami. Taught four, two hour sessions which included the history, basic folds, and twelve different figures of origami.

Adventure Education: Worked with group of sixth graders with activities that taught individualism and teamwork. Showed the importance of each person being unique and how their qualities can benefit a group setting.

Recreation Leadership: Worked with a group of recreation students as an activity facilitator by creating and presenting activities to children, adolescents, and older adults throughout the semester.

Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation: Opportunities during duration of course to work in different settings. Assisted children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities in a pool setting. Helped individuals to improve strength, endurance and flexibility. Facilitated games and activities alongside other therapeutic recreation students and recreation specialists for residents of a long term care facility. Served the residents coffee and tea. Assisted children during a bowling program by helping them learn the correct form of bowling.

Peer Mentor: Work with the new incoming freshman class by introducing aspects of college life and opportunities that make the transition less stressful. Provide guidance on academics, leadership, campus interactions, and personal goals. Work alongside a professor to teach a freshman seminar class.
