Warm-ups Weeks 21 & 22

I’m not much for tv, but lately I’ve been watching “Lost” with my son David. I only watch it if he’s watching it, but I will say it is kind of interesting. Still, it isn’t something that I’d go out of my way to make sure I see it. Do you have a tv show that you like to watch? Is it something that you will drop everything for?

So many people these days seem to need instant gratification. If they don’t see immediate results they assume that what they are doing isn’t working/won’t work and just give up. Many things in life are more complex and require continued, constant effort in order to affect change. In fact, most of life’s more difficult problems will require extensive effort to solve and will not provide instant gratification. It’s okay to be a bit discouraged, just as long as you don’t give up! Do you have the ability to provide constant continued effort or do you tend to give up easily? Especially if you aren’t seeing noticeable progress?

Tomorrow is ground hog day. Ground hog day is an old tradition that basically attempts to predict the weather based on the behavior of a ground hog. Not many people really believe that the ground hog is an accurate predictor of the weather, but yet we hold onto the tradition. Why, I’m not exactly sure…Are there any other traditions that you can think of that you aren’t sure why we still do them? Do you think that the groundhog can predict the weather?

The Superbowl is in town this weekend… usually I would just ask if you had plans to watch it on tv, but this year I get to ask… are you going to the game OR any of the NFL Experience activities scheduled downtown? Most of us can only dream of going to the actual game (tickets are WAY too expensive!), but the NFL Experience has several free events for the public. So… do your plans this weekend include the Superbowl in any way shape or form?

No warm-up … Mrs. Jackson absent

Advertising… it’s huge! Ads are everywhere telling us what we should think, how we should feel, what we should buy, how we should look…what we should wear, where we should go…Have you ever bought anything based on the way it was advertised and then not been happy with the product? Maybe you thought it didn’t work as advertised, didn’t look as advertised… I am a big proponent for truth in advertising. I understand that they need to accentuate the positives of a product in order to sell it, but just how far should they be allowed to go in “accentuating” the positive? Is it ok to stretch the truth and by how much? How do you determine if it is false advertising or merely “stretching the truth”?

Wednesday/Thursday, February 8/9, 2017

Talking about truth in advertising, one of the things that I am really against is the way we portray what women should look like (we do it to men too, just maybe not as much). Keep in mind that when you see a photo of your favorite celebrity on the cover of a magazine, not only have they been through professional hair and makeup artists, but the photo itself has been touched up in Photoshop… so even the celebrity doesn’t look like the photo you see! Watch this short video and then respond in 4 sentences… what do you think about this practice of manipulating photos? How do you think this affects our perception of what we are supposed to look like? How do we help young girls to understand that this isn’t the image they should be striving for?
