Excerpt from Frankenstein, by Sir Walter Scott
Three Heights students, involved in a prestigious ballet academy Ballet Jeunesse, had their 16th annual concert, April 9-10, at Hawken school. Juniors Emily Sharp and Andrea Sinders and freshman Laura Cooperman are members in the senior company. Ballet Jeunesse consists of 29 dancers, 16 in the senior company and 13 in the junior company. Elissa Colombi Okin is the primary director and choreographer of the company this year as well as a major influence in the dancer's performance, according to Cooperman. Sinders, a fifth-year member of the company who has been dancing for 14 years, said, "We worked harder than ever this year and it paid off. Our feet are sore but we had a great concert." The ballet academy is rather unique according to sixth-year dancer Sharp, "It is great to be able to work with choreography and costumes as well as the actual dancing; we get to put our own work on the stage." According to Cooperman, the ballet academy provides an atmosphere different than any other, allowing the students to all become close friends and establish lasting relationships after they graduate. Sharp and Sinders, who graduate from Ballet Jeunesse next year, agreed that ballet has given them discipline and years of fun. In order to graduate from the company, four years in the senior company must be completed during the four years of high school along with a special performance of the company's signature piece.
