Lectures, small group presentations, shared participation, discussions, media/video/PowerPoints, guest speakers, etc.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to provide students with information regarding vocational and professional careers. It describes the scope of a post secondary education beginning with the primary education through community college careers to the transfer selection toward the Baccalaureate. It is designed to assist students in making meaningful decisions regarding educational and career goals. The following topics are a guideline for the issues to be discussed in this course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Select transfer institution based on research on the systems of higher education through the use of university print and electronic catalogs and resources.
2. Construct a student educational plan and identify campus resources and academic policies.
3. Evaluate factors that influence motivation and develop strategies for increasing one’s motivational level. Assess one’s self-esteem level and apply specific strategies and behaviors to raise one’s self-esteem level.
4. Examine health issues such as stress, nutrition, and exercise that affect lifelong wellbeing.
5. Examine principles of critical thinking for academic and personal decision-making.
6. Create effective strategies for managing time and achieving lifelong goals.
7. Differentiate and compare student and vocational development theories and apply one’s values, interests, personality traits, and skills in the career decision-making process.

V. Classroom presentations: University representatives, Financial Aid, etc.
VI. Study skills: How to take notes, preparing for exams, test anxiety
VII. Exploring academic and career options
VIII. Requirements for AA Degree, UCs/IGETC, CSUs, Private Schools, Occupational Certificate Programs
IX. Choosing a major/career, planning a program, and student educational plan
X. Career strategies: Writing professional resumes, cover letter, informational interviews, interviewing skills and preparation, types of interviews, dressing for success, questions most often asked during interviews, what recruiters seek, company research tips, and internships

ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY! ATTEND ALL CLASS MEETINGS FOR THE ENTIRE CLASS PERIOD!

  • Three cases of tardiness may be considered equivalent to one absence
  • Be aware of excessive tardiness as it may lead to dismissal in the class
  • If you are absent or late to class, you are still responsible for any new material that you may have missed
  • PARTICIPATE in class discussions and activities
  • 3-RING BINDER for class handouts and other material, notes, etc. (bring binder to every class!)
  • CELL PHONES: During class, all cell phones and iPods must be turned off! Phones may be kept on if you are expecting an emergency call, but in this case, inform me prior to the start of class and place your phone on silent.
