The world's largest coextrusion blow moulding machine

Built and planned by RIKUTEC

The largest coextrusion blow moulding machine in the world has now been commissioned in Syracuse, in the US state of New York. The machine was developed by the RIKUTEC Company (Altenkirchen, Germany) and is the biggest of its kind to date. RIKUTEC specializes in the construction of high-volume coextrusion blow moulding machines. Over the last fifteen years, it has supplied more than 20 large-scale coextrusion blow moulding machines (starting from 200.00 litres holding volume) with this patented technology to customers around the world.

The machine type GBM S6000/A 400 coex 4 / 4 E 140 is the biggest of its kind. It incorporates a coextrusion accumulator head that holds a volume of 400 litres. This enables the production of hollow bodies with a volumetric capacity of up to 10,000 litres.

The coextrusion head is designed so that hollow bodies can be manufactured as required with wall structures consisting of between one and four layers. This technology offers a wide range of possibilities. For example, inexpensive recycling materials can be reused and polyethylene can be combined to produce different material properties.

The output of the four 140 mm extruders, which was designed for the processing of high molecular weight polyethylene, is more than 2,000 kg/h. As a result, six containers per hour can be produced with a maximum shot volume of approximately 350 kilograms, and the output can be increased by reducing the shot weights. The four-layer coextrusion accumulator head enables the use of extruder dies with diameters of up to 1200 mm.

Corresponding to the size of the machine, the mould clamping system is dimensioned with a mould clamping force of up to 600t. The mould clamping force is evenly transferred by five clamping cylinders on the large mould clamping plate, which is six meters in height and three meters in width.

The machine has space requirements of 14 meters above floor height, 17.4 meters width and 15.6 meters depth. It also requires underfloor depth of 2 meters underneath the mould clamping system. The machine's total weight is approximately 450 tons.

A total time of 16 months was required to complete the project from the planning to the commissioning phase. All phases of the project, from development, though production to installation, were executed by RIKUTEC. The company's CEO Günter Richter and technical project manager, Helmut Möller, personally supervised the project in order to ensure conformity with company's high quality standards at all times. In fact, this is one of the reasons why the customer, Fralo-Plastech, placed the order with RIKUTEC.

The individual machine components were transported from Altenkirchen, via Hamburg, New York or Montreal to Syracuse, where ten experts installed the machine.

RIKUTEC is the only company in the world with the know-how to build such machines. It has been operating in the heavy machine construction industry for 18 years. The RIKUTEC coextrusion blow moulding process is a technology that was specifically developed for high-volume and large-area plastic products with multilayer wall structures that are designed to meet specific product requirements.

For example, RIKUTEC technology can be used for the reuse of plastics in so-called recycling layers. The multilayer wall structure enhances the product's mechanical properties. The permeation properties of fuel tanks and packaging can be decisively improved and diffusive chemicals can be stored and transported without a problem in large containers.

The coextrusion of material compounds enables the production of technical construction parts in various materials to meet specific requirements. The possibility of incorporating different layers provides the products with the necessary stability and deformation resistance. The reincorporation of recycled materials, for example in a 3-layer compound, makes an important contribution to environmental protection.

RIKUTEC also offers article development, manufacturing of adequate Blow moulds, article post processing and plant layout up to turnkey projects.

RIKUTEC is not only a reputed company in the machine construction industry. It is also famous for its plastic solution such as Poly IBC, such as the AquaTern rainwater cisterns in high molecular weight polyethylene, which can hold up to 30,000 litres.
