Using the CAMEOfm Incidents Module for Damage Assessments
Scenario:
You have been directed to create a CAMEO/MARPLOT database for various emergency responses in your area. The incidents could be any of the following:
Wildfires; Structure Fires
HazMat Responses; Clandestine Drug Labs
Severe Weather Events: Tornados, Floods, Hurricanes, etc.
With the new version of CAMEOfm2.3, users can now attach electronic files to Incident and/or Routes module records, as well as Facilities, Special Locations, and Resources. The attached files can be in almost any format, including
.jpg .pdf .doc .xls .tif .bmp
Any CAMEOfm2.3 module record can be linked to any MARPLOT map object, including Symbols, Circles, Polylines, and Polygons.
This exercise will present examples of using two different methods for managing information for a Tornado event using CAMEOfm and MARPLOT; however, the exact same processes could be utilized to manage information for many different types of events. Method 1 is to create a single Incident record for the Tornado, and enter all associated information as “Documents”. Method 2 has users create a tornado record in the Routes module, then create multiple damaged property records each as its own Incident record, and store information for each damaged property using the Documents menu.
CAMEOFM INCIDENTS MODULE for a TORNADO EVENT:
MARPLOT: Plotting the Incident Location on the map
1. Launch MARPLOT
2. Navigate to the area where the tornado occurred
3. Use the Polyline drawing tool to “draw” the tornado path onto the map
4. Make sure to assign the tornado polyline to the Temporary Overlay and the CAMEO Map. You can assign the Color and Line Style as you wish.
The screenshot below is from the May 24, 2011 tornado in Oklahoma. Your tornado path will look different.
5. Use the File / Save as Picture menu to save a screenshot of your tornado display as a .bmp file. Name the file “MARPLOT Tornado Example Screenshot.bmp” and save it to your computer desktop.
CAMEOfm: Creating CAMEOfm Incident Records
1. Open the CAMEOfm Incidents module
2. Select the “New Record” button
3. Select “Neither” from the message box
4. Name the new record “2011-5-24 Tornado”
At this point, you can choose to enter more information to the various CAMEOfm Incidents record…or not. It is completely up to you. Any information you enter here will be “searchable” in CAMEO, and thus may be helpful to you. For our purposes in this exercise, we are going to enter only a few fields here….
5. Enter a Location, City, State, Zip, County, and Fire District. Mine is shown as an example below. Notice that I entered more than one “County” because the tornado I am cataloguing impacted 4 counties.
You will need to decide what information needs to be entered to the Incidents fields.
6. Select the Response and Evaluation tab.
7. Enter a number of Injuries and Deaths
Again, there are a large number of fields available in the Incidents module to which you can enter, store, and retrieve information.
With CAMEO2.3, you may notice an additional tab titled “Notes / Documents”. This is the tab that allows users to attach external files to this record.
To continue with this exercise, you will now need some real or example files to be attached to this Incident record. I place some example Tornado Event files on the DEQ CAMEO page at http://www.deq.state.ok.us/LPDnew/saratitleiii/cameo.htm. However, I suggest you use your own files rather than my examples.
Recommend at least one example of each of the following file types:
WORD doc EXCEL spreadsheet .pdf file .jpg
NOTE: You can also attach video files here…such as . avi, .mpg, .wav, and .mov files or other video file types.
8. Select the “Note / Documents” tab; select the “Documents” tab
9. Select the “Add” button
10. Use the resulting browser to select one of the files you wish to attach to the CAMEO Incidents record; I have selected a .jpg of some of the tornado damage for my example.
11. Continue to select the Add button and add all the files you wish.
12. After adding all the desired files, select the “Save Changes” button
13. Double-click on any of the added files

You may attach as many files as you wish to this record.
Linking the CAMEOfm Incidents record to the MARPLOT map object:
1. Open MARPLOT
2. Select the polyline representing the Tornado path
3. Select the “Sharing / CAMEOfm / Link object” menu
4. Make sure the CAMEOfm Incident record for this tornado is displayed on your CAMEO screen
5. Select the “Link/Link this record” menu
The MARPLOT polyline representing the tornado is now linked to the CAMEOfm Incident record.
Using the CAMEOfm – MARPLOT Link:
1. Exit both CAMEOfm and MARPLOT
2. Launch MARPLOT
3. Select the polyline representing the tornado path
4. Select the “Sharing / CAMEOfm / Get info” menu
5. This should open the CAMEOfm Incident record you just linked
6. Select the “Notes / Documents” tab
7. Select the “Docuements” tab
8. Double-click any of the associated files
CAMEOfm Incidents for individual locations damaged by a tornado.
Above, the “tornado” was treated as a single, large-scale incident. You may wish to utilize the CAMEOfm Incidents to store information for each single property/location sustaining tornado damage. An example of how you might do this is below.
MARPLOT: Plotting the Incident Location on the map
1. Launch MARPLOT
2. Navigate to a property where tornado damage occurred
3. Create a new MARPLOT Overlay named “2011-5-24 Tornado Damage Sites”
4. Use the Symbol Tool to place a symbol on MARPLOT where damage occurred
5. Name the new Symbol object “address of location” see my example below
6. Assign the new Symbol to the “2011-5-24 Tornado Damage Sites” overlay and assign to the CAMEO Map
7. Save a screenshot of the location as a street map and save a screenshot of the location as an aerial photo; save both to your computer desktop
CAMEOfm: Changing the Tornado Path from Incidents to Routes
1. Open the CAMEOfm Routes module
2. Select the “New Record” button
3. Enter the Route name and other text as shown below
You now have a Routes record for the Tornado event, which will allow you to have “relate” the new Incident records that you will be creating “relate” to this Route record.
4. Open MARPLOT and select the Tornado polyline
5. Select the Sharing / CAMEOfm / Unlink Objects menu (this will delete the existing link from the Tornado map object to the CAMEOfm Incident record)
6. Select “Yes” from the unlink object Message displayed in CAMEOfm
7. Return to MARPLOT and select the Tornado object polyline
8. Select the Sharing / CAMEOfm / Link object menu
9. This should return you to CAMEOfm
10. Open the Routes module and select the new Tornado record
11. Select the “Link / Link this record” menu
12. The MARPLOT Tornado line should now be linked to the CAMEOfm Routes Tornado record
CAMEOfm: Creating CAMEOfm Incident Records for a single property
1. Open the CAMEOfm Incidents module
2. Select the “New Record” button
3. Select “Route” from the message box
4. Select the 2011-5-24 Tornado record
5. Name the new record “address of location”
6. Enter information to the remaining CAMEOfm Incident record field as desired
7. Select the “Notes/Documents” and “Documents” tab
8. Select the “Add” button
9. Use the browser to select photos, forms, reports, videos, etc for the desired address
10. Select “Save Changes” button
11. Double-click on any of the added Documents files to view the information
Linking the CAMEOfm Incidents record to the MARPLOT map object:
1. Open MARPLOT
2. Select the Symbol representing the damaged location
3. Select the “Sharing / CAMEOfm / Link object” menu
4. Make sure the CAMEOfm Incident record for this address record is displayed on your CAMEO screen
5. Select the “Link/Link this record” menu
Note: repeat the above process as many times as necessary to enter and link all the damaged properties association with this event
I created two records for my Tornado incident. Screenshots are shown below:
Using the CAMEOfm – MARPLOT Link:
9. Exit both CAMEOfm and MARPLOT
10. Launch MARPLOT
11. Select the symbol representing the damaged location
12. Select the “Sharing / CAMEOfm / Get info” menu
13. This should open the CAMEOfm Incident record you just linked
14. Select the “Notes / Documents” tab
15. Select the “Docuements” tab
16. Double-click any of the associated files
Note: this alternate approach to using CAMEO for a tornado event creating a Routes record for the tornado polyline, rather than an Incidents record. The Routes record also features a Documents tab, so the various photos, documents, spreadsheets, etc. can be attached to a Routes record. The individual damage sites would remain as Incident records, but each could be related to the Routes record for the Tornado. If you did this approach, you will be able to do searches in Routes for the “2011-5-24” event, and then use the Record / Show Related menu to display all the Incident records that are related to that Route (event) record. This represents a different method to manage the information in CAMEO…users will need to determine what data management method best suits their needs.
Printing the CAMEOfm Incidents record, the MAPLOT Map page, and the Documents files:
Printing MARPLOT
1. Open MARPLOT
2. Select the Symbol representing the damaged location
3. Select the “File / Print” menu
4. Print the MARPLOT screen; OR
5. Select the “File / Save as picture” menu
6. Save the file to your computer desktop
7. Minimize MARPLOT; select the saved file from your desktop; and Print it
Printing CAMEOfm
You can Print either the CAMEOfm record, or any of the Documents files, or all of them
Printing the CAMEOfm record:
1. Open CAMEOfm
2. Select the Incidents or Routes record you wish to Print
3. Select the “File / Print Report” menu
4. Choose “Current Record” and “Select All”
5. Select “Print Report”
Printing the Documents
1. Open CAMEOfm
2. Select the Incidents or Routes record that has Documents attached
3. Select and open the Document you wish to Print
4. This will open the Document file in a different software, i.e. WORD, EXCEL, Picture Viewer, etc.
5. Use the File menu in whatever software is open to Print the file.
