MSLID MEETING NOTESPrepared by:Kay Hickey, secretary

February 16th 2015

Meeting called to order at 6:00pm at the Maple Lake Legion.

Attendance:Pat Hickey (first 20 minutes), Guy Vance, Brad Longtin, Russ Orson, Kathleen Poate,

Jen Poate, Dan Henrichs, Ken Christiansen, Kay Hickey

TAMS:Discussion regarding ‘Community Watch’ poster

  • Should we move forward with completing sign?
  • Reviewed samples of posters that have been submitted so far.
  • Posters are somewhat redundant to what is already posted on the sign at the landing.
  • Based on residents’ comments at the last annual meeting it was proposed there is some type of warning posted to deter violations.
  • Pat Hickey made a motion to move forward with the Community Watch/Warning poster
  • The group voted and it was decided to move forward to complete the poster and post it at the landing.
  • The group was asked to submit samples for the poster via e-mail. Try to have it narrowed down to 2 or 3 samples and vote at next meeting. We should not need to spend much more time on this during our meeting time.
  • Action:Vote for final poster at next meeting. Delegate for someone to have poster printed. Post it at the landing in the spring, preferably in a separate area from the current sign.

MSLID Treasurer Report: Guy Vance

  • We chose to bypass the treasurer’s report as to give our guest speaker more time.

Guest Speaker

  • Rob Olson from Clarke was invited to give a presentation on Aquatic Invasive Species and answer any questions we had.
  • Clarke is a global Company and has been in business for 85 years
  • Clarke specializes in mosquito control and aquatics.
  • An informative video was presented.
  • Habitat mapping systems and pre and post mapping services are a unique feature that Clarke provides.
  • Rob will text or e-mail residents and/or MSLID when spraying has been completed.
  • Clarke uses a combination of surface spraying and injectable treatments.

Recommendations for treating Invasive AquaticSpecies

  • Continue to spray channels and encourage residents to spray shorelines for curly leaf.
  • Clarke will do a milfoil survey at the same time the bio base survey is done. Based on these results, Rob will make further recommendations to the MSLID.
  • The LID will decide how to proceed based on the budget, Clarke’s survey results, and Rob’s recommendations.
  • Encourage residents to do a second spray of their shorelines for curly leaf. It is not allowed to do a second spraying in the channels.
  • Rob recommends doing a full Intercept survey every 5 years and a bio base yearly.

Bio Base = an electronic scan of the lake that shows weed densities etc..

Intercept = rake system which involves manually raking up weeds for identification and density etc.. This is done over the entire area of the lakes.

  • MSLID has signed the 2015 contract with Clarke for the bio base survey and spraying of the channels.
  • A suggestion was made to put markers around clusters of milfoil to deter boat traffic through those areas and reduce risk of spreading it. This may require more discussion after the survey is completed.
  • A question was presented to Rob as to his advice to allow spraying of milfoil for residents that have it along their shoreline. Rob’s response was to organize a door to door attempt to gather signatures for the treatment of milfoil within the 1st 150 feet.
  • A request was presented to Rob if he could ask Clarke to mark the sprayed channels more clearly. There were some concerns from lake residents that the markers used last year were not visible enough which risked having them run over by boats resulting in potential boat/prop damage. Rob responded by saying he would take this into consideration. They have had negative feedback from other lakes when they used larger markers because they were considered to be unsightly.

Grants

  • Brad has a handle on the grants available through the DNR
  • There are only 12 lakes in Wright County that spray for A.I.S, so we should have a good chance to obtain some of the money that is available.
  • Brad has secured a grant(???sorry Brad, I didn’t get this in my notes. Could you add the grant and dollar amt.)

Adjourn:The meeting was adjourned at 7:20pm. Next meeting will be on Monday, March 16th, 2015 at the Maple Lake Legion basement.

On behalf of the MSLID and property owners of Mink and Somers Lakes, I would like to extend our appreciation to Rob from Clarke for his informative presentation and for taking the time to answer our questions and offering his professional recommendations for the betterment of our lakes. And, thanks also to Jen Poate for getting it all set up!
