Introduction:
This SOP describes the use and cleaning procedures for the -80. These freezers are primarily used for the storage of samples.
Health and Safety
- Wear protective gloves, eye protection and clothing when using this freezer..
- Be aware of any potential harmful samples stored.
- Do Not store any food or drink within the -80 Freezer.
- Do Not store flammable liquids in the -80
- All items in the -80 freezer should be labelled with the following details;
Owners Name
Department and contact number
Contents of store item
Date
- Contents of all items which are stored in the -80 freezer should be checked regularly and disposed of if no longer required.
Cleaning Procedure:
- The -80 freezer is defrosted, disinfected and cleaned if there is a visible build up of ice.
- Wear personal protective equipment when undertaking cleaning procedures.
- Notify the control centre on extension 64582 when you are going to turn off the -80 freezer so that they are aware of the reason for the temperature change.
- Empty the contents of the freezer by removing everything into another -80 freezer as quickly as possible. Wear protective gloves whilst moving the contents and use a trolley to transport the items.
- Disconnect the electrical supply before commencing cleaning.
- Wipe the door seals and remove any deposits of ice.
- Place towels on the surrounding floor and place inside the -80 to soak up the water
- Place a “Slippery Surface” sign at the area to notify people of the possible hazard.
- Leave the door partially open to aid in the defrosting process.
- Once the appliance has defrosted, clean the interior with a suitable disinfectant and dry thoroughly.
- Close the door and restore power to the appliance.
- Once the temperature has returned to working temperature, return contents.
