Date the funding is required:
If you need to pay any providers prior to your event please let us know the date you need the money. / January 9th, 2017
Is this a collaboration between student groups, if yes which ones:
If this is a collaboration, both groups should list their fundraising figure, breakdown and contribution to event / No, although these classes will be open to all students.
What is the funding required for:
Outline why you need the funding here, this should be reflected in the expenditure also / This funding is required to set up potions classes for members of the University of Leicester. The funding will be used to purchase potions books, cauldrons, and scales that can be used in future years. It will also be used to pay a teacher to come on campus and teach potions.
How does this event meet the aims and objectives of your group?
Provide us with details on how this event is relevant to your group / The aims and objectives of the Harry Potter Society concern having a social space for magical students on the University of Leicester campus. These classes will fulfil this aim by having a weekly space for magical students to meet and learn a magical craft (potions). These classes will also broadcast magic to muggle students which is another one of our aims.
How will this benefit the students and/or wider communities?
Detail what specific benefits the students will have / These classes will benefit students of the Harry Potter Society and the wider student body by allowing them to increase their potion making ability. This knowledge is invaluable for magical children who made the decision to undertake a muggle education as they missed out on potions classes at Hogwarts. The social element of these classes will also benefit students by fostering a stronger relationship between magic and muggle students.
Approximately how many students would this benefit?
List how many members and students combined you expect to come to this event – We do not need a list of names. / Classes will have a maximum capacity of 50 due to room capacity and teaching ability. If oversubscribed we will look to hold classes at different times using the same equipment.
How does this event meet the Development Quality Outcomes?
  • Innovative events – new ideas
  • Aimed at developing or promoting employability skills or opportunities
  • Enhancing the leadership of the group for the benefit of their members and wider student population
  • Making a positive impact on students, university and the wider community
/ These potions classes are a first on the University of Leicester campus, never before have our magical students been able to share their skills with muggle students. Certifications in proficiency in making potions will increase the employability of University of Leicester students aiming for magical careers. We have opened these classes to the student body as a whole, not just members of the Harry Potter society, thus making a positive impact on the wide community and enhancing the relationship between magical and muggle students.
How does this event meet the Participation Quality Outcomes?
  • Non-alcohol focused events
  • Events that promote widening participation agenda (positive representation of University experience to perspective students who normally would not consider it)
  • Collaborative events with other students groups
  • Educational opportunities for members, wider student body and community
/ These classes are completely non-alcohol focused. We aim to widen participation by opening classes to all students, and the fact that a well-established magical society is up and running on campus will also widen participation by attracting magical students (who normally wouldn’t consider it) to muggle education. With the exception of the teaching fee, once the equipment has been purchased for these classes these benefits will apply for years to come. These classes will be sustainable as the class fee covers the teaching cost.
How does this event meet the Engagement Quality Outcomes?
  • Activities that enable minority groups to participate
  • Engagement with Mature Students (23+ years)
  • Engagement with Postgraduate Students
  • Developing links (and fundraising opportunities) with alumni (past members)
/ These classes are open to anyone, including students who identify as part of a minority group. Many magical students on campus who will be participating in these classes are mature and post-graduate students, having attended a magical school for part of their education before returning to muggle education.
What is the frequency of your event?
e.g. One Off / Once a Week / Fortnightly / Monthly / Termly / Once a week in Semester One, with a possibility to become more frequent if very popular and oversubscribed.
