Fall Semester Independent Reading Assessment

Select a novel from the banned book list (found on my website). You must have parent permission to read this book. You will read this book on your own and will write a essay that will count as your final for the 1st semester

Essay requirements:

Read a banned book with parental approval. A list can be found on my website. You are looking specifically for evidence of the loyalties, the conflict, and character perspective.

Body Paragraph 1: Define and prove the theme of the banned book. Remember, theme is what we can learn from a story are inferred and are about the BIG world.

Body Paragraph 2: Describe why you think the book you chose was banned.

Body Paragraph 3: Identify and describe how stereotypes affect the story.

You will have one day in class (December 13) that is dedicated to preparing your notes for this in-class essay, which will be collected at the end of the period. You will have access to your prepared notes and will have the entire period on the day of the final (December 14 or 15) to write your essay final.

Format Instructions:

Ink- pen or printer, black only

Title- Centered and student created. Do NOT underline, quote, or italicize.

Intro Paragraph: 60-80 words, 3-5 sentences, including a clear thesis.

Body Paragraphs (3 of them): at least 120 words, 11 sentences, including clear intro sentence and transition sentence.

Conclusion Paragraph: 60-80 words, 3-5 sentences, restating what was written in your intro using different words and phrasing.
