Exchange programme for academic staff members

This exchange programme for academic staff members arises from the collaboration agreement signed by the Kwame Nkrumah University Of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Stellenbosch University. This programme creates possibilities for academics from both these institutions to become involved in joint research projects and to pay mutual visits for stipulated periods by invitation.

1. Particulars for Exchanging Lecturers

1.1 SU provides a cumulative total of six (6) months accommodation per year free of charge for visiting staff of KNUST.

1.2 SU provides up to two (2) return air tickets per year for staff from Stellenbosch who intend to visit KNUST.

1.3 in return, KNUST agrees to facilitate similar arrangements where resources allow.

2. Application procedure

STELLENBOSCH STAFF visiting KNUST

2.1  Each institution awards the scholarship in accordance with its own procedures and criteria. At Stellenbosch the programme is managed by the Postgraduate & International Office (PGIO), which handles all applications and correspondence.

2.2  Application form EXCHANGE-Genform must be used. It is available on request from the PGIO (tel. 2607), Admin A Building or via email: .

2.3  Applications must be recommended by the departmental chairperson and relevant dean. Applications, with the confidential recommendations attached, must be sent to the PGIO via the particular dean’s office.

KNUST STAFF visiting SU

2.4  Requests for visiting SU have to be send to Prof. Kwasi Obiri Danso, Dean: International Programmes Office,

He will notify SU of the visit, if the request was approved.

2.5  Applications must be recommended by the departmental chairperson and relevant dean. Applications, with the recommendations attached, must be sent to the PGIO by Dr Matengu.

3. Important considerations

3.1  The funds for this programme are made available at central level to both universities and are not limited to only certain fields of study.

3.2  Visits that concur with the following will be given preference:

Ø  academic work of outstanding quality

Ø  joint research projects with a long-term objective

Ø  existing cooperation

Ø  projects that will lead to (a) publication(s) in accredited journals

3.3  Normally only study leave may be used for participation in this programme. The normal procedure for leave applications must be followed. Participation in this programme cannot serve as motivation for extraordinary leave.

4. Responsibilities on arrival of participants from KNUST

4.1  The PGIO arranges suitable accommodation and will contact the host about all practical arrangements regarding the accommodation.

4.2  The PGIO meets the visitor at the airport and provides transport to Stellenbosch.

4.3  The PGIO arranges a tour of the campus for the visitor and makes available general information about the university to the visitor.

4.4  At the request of the host, the PGIO will supply transport to the airport at the conclusion of the visit.

4.5  The host department is responsible for the following:

Ø  Office space and general integration into the department/institution;

Ø  Computer facilities and email connection;

Ø  Visitor’s card for access to the library and relevant academic building;

Ø  The costs of all other travelling arrangements are for the relevant department or visitor’s account.
