Principal’s Report

Last Thursday was our school’s Open Day. Thank you to all the parents, caregivers, grandparents and visitors who came to see our students learning. We had many visitors from noon onwards. Thank you to the parents who kindly assisted with the distribution of the Sushi rolls, what a success! The children enjoy having visitors to their class and enjoy showing their books, projects and artwork. Many adults made use of the library at lunchtime to sit and relax and have a coffee with friends. We were fortunate to have several community support groups available chatting with parents at this time. Relationships Australia is holding a six week workshop for Korean mothers on Fridays in the library and Mrs Byun had invited the other groups facilitators to chat with parents. It was wonderful to see a number of grandparents, often a wonderful resource for schools and we greatly encourage their visits and voluntary assistance. One of our volunteers (Mrs Wallington, grandparent) has assisted on a weekly basis for the past twenty years. She continues to be a significant helper in the Support Classes and recently in the library.

Volunteers are always encouraged within our school and can take on various roles.

One parent mentioned that she found our school “so inclusive”. What a reinforcing comment to make, as our students come from over forty nationalities and range in ability from the very talented to students who struggle with learning and a variety of disabilities. Schools celebrate diversity providing many opportunities for students to develop understanding of each other. Thus we are teaching our children to function to their highest potential in our very diverse

society.

After lunch we had 18 parents attend the workshop on Cybersafety. Parents were able to see a number of short video clips on how to protect their children when using the internet. One of the main points is to always have the computer in open view in your home so you can monitor your child’s activities.

Bus Bay

The teachers and Learning Support Officers love

assisting your children to their car. We always have two members of staff on duty at the bus bay each afternoon. Please do not leave your car to pick up your child. If you wish to speak to your child’s teacher please park at the shopping centre. The area for the Bus bay is a “Kiss and Ride” zone. Parents are to quickly deliver or pick up their children in this area only. Children cannot walk in between cars. Any complaints about fines need to be directed to the Ryde Council. The council rangers are very vigilant and are on patrol often at the bus bay.

Festival of Instrumental Music

Congratulations to the thirty students who attended the Monday night concert at the Opera House this week. The Combined Recorder Ensemble was a highlight of this wonderful concert. We are so fortunate to have dedicated students who have practised over a long period of time under the direction and guidance of Miss Mee. Thank you to Mrs Pocknall and Mrs Arnott who supervised the students at the practise sessions and at the concert. Without dedicated teachers and parents these concerts would not be possible.

Journalists’ Club, Meet the staff

An interview with Mr Ryan

Interviewers: Joy and Rowena

Q: When did you first decide to become a teacher, and

where did you train?

A: Well, I think it was around 1986 when I first decided to be a teacher, and I trained at this place called Sydney Teachers College, which is now part of Sydney University.

Q: How long have you been teaching, and what other

schools have you taught in?

A: Around…25 years? I’ve taught in lots of country schools, like Wongarbon, Dubbo West, York Public School and more. At one school, because they didn’t have sprinklers back then, in arid weather (the perfect condition for snakes), I had to chase off two big brown snakes. I didn’t kill them, though. But it was still very dangerous, although the snake didn’t have a triangular-shaped head, which is a sign that indicates that the snake is poisonous.

Q: Can I just ask, what was the average number of pupils at a small country school in the late ‘80s?

A: Oh, NOTHING compared to our school today. About 30 students per class and 3 teachers per school, I think.

Q: Wow. Now that’s a BIG difference. Anyway, what do you most enjoy about teaching?

A: I love seeing children smile and have fun in learning, and I think the same goes for all the other teachers.

Q: Have you had any other jobs apart from teaching?

A: I was a banker, a cleaner, and also a nurse.

Q: Do you have any children?

A: I’ve got a lovely daughter called Amy, and she’s seventeen years old.

Q: Which month were you born in, and how old are you now?

A: I was born in April 26th, and no, I am NOT telling you my age. I’m still young enough to have fun, though. (laughs)

Q: Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?

A: I like to cook, listen to music, and make new friends, and I also like working with the students and teachers. Oh, and also, I like Panaboards and Smartboards. I remember how in the 1980’s there were no photocopiers, so we had to use a jellypad (a tool which you use to literally stamp a worksheet- but first, you needed to carve the whole thing in.), and it was very annoying, so we used books. Technology has changed for the better. Sometimes, I think it changed for the better a bit too quickly, because I have trouble using some of the new technology …I have to get a student to do it for me.

Q: Thank you.

A: My pleasure.
