Family tradition says Christian came to PA at 4 or 5 yrs of age. He sailed from Rotterdam with his father and mother, but they died at sea and he was indentured in PA to pay for his passage.

He is believed to have imigrated to America in 1750, as a child with his parents.

Christian was a revolutionary soldier who served with the Continental Army. It is believed that the Sturtzs were Moravians, now a part of Czechoslovakia.

Christian Sturtz served as a Major with the 5th PA Battalion, Continental Line. His military duty lasted from 10/1/1776 to 12/31/1780.

His estate was #10, 1826 in Somerset County. He also appears on the 1800 census list for Londonderry Twp, Somerset County along with Jacob, Adam, and Christian, Jr Sturtz. Londonderry became Southampton in 1801.

On the farm where Christian Sturtz lived, three generations lived there and were born there. In a letter dated Jan 2, 1934 written by the wife of one of the Sturtz's born there, she remembers her father in law tell about the rocks he had to pick up on that land.

Son John Jacob Sturtz moved to Ohio after service in the Revolutionary War. He had received 1000 acres of land on Perry Co., Ohio for service in the Revolutionary War. Land records changed the name to Storts and the family never corrected it. The inscription on a monument in Perry Co., Ohio states " John Jacob Storts died 12 Jan. 1852, age 88 yrs. 6 mo. 2 da. Enlisted at Red Hill, Pa. 5 April 1777. Was with Washington at Valley Forge."

According to a 1929 newspaper clipping about Mrs. Maria Storts Allen, daughter of John Jacob Storts, John Jacob Storts enlisted in the Continental Army at the age of 14, taking the place of his father. His father returned to care for his large family. (Newspaper clipping in the Sturtz file at the Somerset Historical Society.)

Relatives in Ohio say that the original name in Pennsylvania was Sturtz and that when families moved to Ohio some of the mis-spelling occurred in land deeds, and were never corrected.

Lillian Storts Babcock wrote a series of letters from 1928 to 1932 during a cruise to a historian at the
Somerset Co Historical Society about the Revolutionary War service of her ancestor, great great grandfather, John Jacob Sturtz/Storts. These letters were preserved in a file at the Society headquarters. In another letter by a relative of Mrs. Babcock, written Jan 2, 1934 from Kansas City to Mr. Charles Cook at the Somerset Historical Society, she states Mrs. Babcock was killed by a nephew in California, probably sometime prior to Sept. 1933, and she had inherited Mrs. Babcock's diary which contained all of the Sturtz family history. This would have coincided with Mrs. Babcock's return to San Fransisco from her world cruise.

Babcock letters:

Oct 10, 1928 - Selsdon Park, Sanderstead, Surrey, London

Wrote To Somerset Historical Society asking for information on Sturtz family. Believes family is Moravian and very religious.

Dec. 8, 1928 - Selsdon Park, Sanderstead, Surrey, London

She states John Jacob Storts stated in his request for a pension in 1852 that he was born in Bucks Co. PA, July 10, 1763 and that his birth was recorded in German. He enlisted from Red Hill, PA April 5, 1777. He was in the battle of Valley Forge and served in the artillery. He stated in his pension request that he marched to Maryland to guard the prisoners and troops at Fredericktown in 1781. In June or Sept. 1781 he re-enlisted from Fredericktown under Capt. Ben Fickle. Also served under Capt. Brown and Bentley and Col. Joseph Wood. After the war he stated he lived in Frederick Co, MD, later in a county in PA, and then in Ohio. He died in Perry Co, Ohio in 1852.

She states John Jacob and his father Christian STURTZ were both given grants of land in Bedford Co. in 1789.

Dec. 18, 1928 - Aboard a ship based out of Bremen - "Columbus"

Mrs. Babcock states only Christian took up his land grant in Bedford Co., PA.

Feb. 16, 1929 - Enroute to Honolulu, American Mail Line, President Liners

Mrs. Babcock writes that she has found several entries in the PA archives series that list a John Stotz and John Storts serving in the artillery from Bucks County, PA during the Revolution.

March 6, 1929 -- Enroute to Manila, American Mail Line

She writes that in 1818, Christian Sturtz Sr. gave a power of attorney to his son, Adam. Somerset Co. Vol. 10, p. 57. Sons John Jacob and a younger brother, Abraham, came to Ohio sometime before 1823. Then she speculates that this Christian was the son of Christian, b. 1743.

She also writes that the family always traded in Cumberland, Md. though they lived in Somerset Co.

June 7, 1929 -- Manila, P. I.

She writes that Jacob Stortz received a grant of 100 acres of land in Bedford Co. Nov. 13, 1789, Vol. 25, p. 627. Christian Stortz received a grant of 25 acres the same day, but had also received a previous grant of 100 acres.

Sept 6, 1929 -- Manila, Philappines

She writes that she believes John Jacob marched into Maryland as he was a guard to troops there after Cornwallis' surrender.

April 25, 1930 -- Inland Sea, Dollar Steamship Line, SS President Lincoln

She writes that John Jacob served under a Capt. Brown, Col. Joseph Wood, and Capt. Eyre, and Capt. Benjamin Fickle. Fickle's troops were transferred to Maryland and are known to have guarded Cornwallis' troops.

She also writes that in 1750 a Ludwig, Peter, and Christian Stotz came over to PA. They were Moravians and she believes they may be brothers. (There is another family story passed down, not verified, that Christian's parents died at sea and that Christian was sold as an indentured servant to pay for his passage.)

Feb 18, 1931 -- Manila, Philippines

Mrs. Babcock mentions that the Jacob Stortz land grant was on Wills Creek, Tub Mill Run, in the area of Wellersburg.

This was the end of this wonderful series of letters found on the Sturtz family, written over 60 years ago, when a member of the family was still alive -- Mrs. Babcock's aunt, Maria Storts Allen -- who remembered this Revolutionary War veteran. Maria Storts was 10 yrs old, born in 1842, when her father John Jacob died in 1852.
