Dear Parents,

Next week our class will study rocks. Rocks are always fascinating to young children! We will learn to describe rocks using five properties. The properties are: mass (weight), size, shape, color, and texture. We will talk about how we use rocks, we will compare our rock to our friend’s rock, and we will weigh rocks. We will even make some rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic)! We will also continue to count sets and write the corresponding number, decompose and compose numbers from 11-19, weigh objects using a balance scale, and subtract.

____ I would like for your child to find a rock and investigate it. First, I want him/her to think about its appearance. Then your child will color the square next to the word that best describes it. Continue with the color, texture, size, and shape portions of the investigative paper. Please send the rock to school in a bag that is labeled with your child’s name, along with the investigative paper. Don’t forget to have your child put his/her first and last name on the paper.

____The new words are: she, all. The book, Rocks, is enclosed. This book will put the words back into text. Please review the words that we have learned so far. We have learned all of the first and second nine-weeks words and up to “al”l in the third nine weeks words.

_____ Math Focus: Have your child complete pages 261 and 262 (attached). The children have completed work like this at school. It should not be unfamiliar to him/her. Make sure your child writes his/her name on the math paper and returns it to school.

_____Review the addition and subtraction math facts through five with the enclosed flashcards. The children are required to answer these number facts quickly, without counting fingers. With lots of practice, it becomes very easy for them to do!

_____ Please remember to return the leveled books with your comments. The more your child reads, the better reader he/she becomes! Don’t forget to let your child read the leveled books on Raz-Kids!

_____Communication Connection: Please remember to return these each week with your observations so that I can complete my observations for the next week.

_____ I read the following books with my child this week.
