THE EXTRA MILE: PAYROLL DEDUCTIONS

The YAP family respectfully requests your attention to three very important extra efforts aimed toward the village, if not the global village, in the care and nurturing of children. It has been noted that if every active employee donated just one dollar a week, we could collectively raise over $100,000 for these worthy causes annually.

YAP Endowment Fund

The purpose of the Endowment Fund is to provide scholarships for our youth upon successful completion of the YAP program. Scholarships will be given for classes, say, for truck driver training up to and including Ph.D. programs. Scholarships are awarded any time of the year and recipients can re-apply every semester.

Guatemala Guns . Terrorism . Murder

These are dangers familiar to YAP staff who work in gang-dominated neighborhoods. In Guatemala, human rights activist Carlos Toledo faces similar threats, with one important difference. Toledo and the children he serves are targets, not of gangs, but of their government. The crime of thousands of homeless Guatemalan children is simply that they exist. They are considered despicable pests, not human beings in need. Toledo’s crime is trying to help them.

Toledo’s National Movement for Street Children receives no official funding. Only the bravest of Guatemala’s private citizens publicly support his efforts. With nowhere else to turn, he sought help in the United States. In 1991, he received the Reebok Award for Human Rights. He also found a friend in Youth Advocate Programs, Inc.

Sierra Leone War . Devastation . Strife

Today, thousands of Sierra Leone’s youth are homeless, separated from their parents, disconnected from the educational system and living in government camps with no one to care for them. Many non-governmental organizations have overlooked the impact the war has had on children. These youth are looked upon as hopeless members of the society, killers, indistinguishable from the rebels.

The Sierra Leone Youth Advocate Program (SL YAP) focuses on Sierra Leone youth as the most delicate and most devastated members of this ongoing conflict. SL YAP aims to regain control of their lives and to empower them to become productive contributors to Sierra Leone’s bright future.... A bright future the youth will create.
