Text: TU MUNDO (1st. Ed.) by Andrade, Egasse, Muñoz, Cabrera Puche.
!Hola!
The main focus of Spanish 180 is on listening and speaking with reading and writing as supporting skills. Content areas include: expressions relating to daily life, environment, routine activities, and descriptions of people and places. Vocabulary will include simple greetings, leave takings, courtesy expressions, family members, numbers, time, dates, weather, colors, and basic objects in the immediate environment. You will be able to demonstrate the ability to comprehend and produce simple sentences dealing with schedules, addresses, telephone numbers, weather reports, short information articles, signs, and postcards. You will also learn about various aspects of Hispanic cultures.
The course and the text are based on the Natural Approach to foreign language acquisition. That is, you will be acquiring language in the classroom, as opposed to learning it, much like a child acquires a first language. Emphasis will be on acquisition and not on learning.
EXAMS
We will cover chapters 1-6. There will be 3 chapter exams and six vocabulary quizzes, covering chapters 1-6, and no cumulative final exam. You may drop the lowest of the first two chapter exams but not the last exam. The last exam cannot be dropped. If you miss an exam (except for the last exam), that’s the exam you get to drop. Please do not ask if you can make up an exam. You may also drop the lowest of your 6 chapter vocab quizzes.
Exams will be given on the following dates. (Please bring a blue or green scantron)
· Exam 1 (chapters 1/2) Wednesday, Oct. 5
· Exam 2 (chapters 3/4) Monday, Nov. 7
· Exam 3 (chapters 5/6) Wednesday, Dec. 14
Oral exam (extra credit) Monday, Dec. 12
Vocab quizzes
There will be 6 vocab quizzes covering the six chapters. Each vocab quiz will have 25 questions with mostly only pictures. A scantron is not necessary. Each quiz will take 10 minutes only. Yay.
Vocab quizzes will be given on the following days
Chapter 1 Monday, September 12
Chapter 2 Monday, September 26
Chapter 3 Wednesday, October 12
Chapter 4 Wednesday, October 26
Chapter 5 Wednesday, November 16
Chapter 6 Monday, December 5
HOMEWORK: You have 2 outside HW assignments
This course is worth 5 (five) units. The homework is appropriate for a 5-unit course. Plan to study 10-20 hours a week outside of class in order to keep up in class. Homework will be assigned from the Connect online workbook, from the text, and from other outside resources.
I. Connect online homework assignments
· You have online homework to do from the Connect website. Each Connect online workbook chapter is worth 100 points.
· One online homework chapter assignment will be dropped.
· You may do Connect online HW late but will lose 25% per day that it is late. The last connect HW assignment (ch. 6) cannot be turned in late.

I. Text book assignments (infórmate)

· Each chapter’s HW assignment should be done on a HW template provided.
· After completing each assignment (template), students need to correct their own work using the back of the book (p. A-1)
· Students need to use a red, green, or purple pen to correct their work.
· Work turned in without corrections will not be accepted and will be late.

OTHER ASSIGNMENTS
Spanish Dictionary
· Your Spanish dictionary will be your first 5 point assignment due the second week of class Wednesday, September 7.
· I recommend buying a good Spanish dictionary and spending at least $5.00. Electronic dictionaries can be purchased online and are an excellent resource. Smartphone dictionaries/Apps may not be used at any time.
ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION:
· Attendance is extremely important.
· Attendance is worth 25% of your grade
· You are allowed 1 free absence
· Beginning with the 2nd absence, you will lose 10 points of your attendance/participation grade which comes out to 2.5% of your final grade for each additional absence.
· Students who leave early will count as ½ an absence.
· 3 tardies equals one absence
· There is no such thing as an excused absence.
English in the classroom
· In class, you’ll be encouraged to speak Spanish at all times.
· Just for fun, during the last hour of class, students who speak English will lose 1 point of their class participation grade.
· Spanglish is not permitted nor can you say, “Como se dice + English word.”
· Proper nouns are fun and are completely acceptable. Those are words that start with a capital letter, such as Walmart, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Orange Coast College, UCI, Huntington Beach, America’s Got Talent, etc.
· Yay!
EVALUATION & ASSESSMENT:
Your grade will be based on the following criteria:

Total 100%

Extra Credit Oral Exam
As a rule, I usually don’t give extra credit. However, this semester we are going through what’s called, “assessment,” which means the state of CA wants to know if you’ve learned anything. Instead of requiring an oral exam and scaring you, the exam will be extra credit. The exam will cover 5 different stories that we’ll be acquiring in class. Students have an opportunity to earn 2% extra credit which will be added to their final grade. A perfect score (5) will earn 2% while a score of (1) will earn .04%. · Do not put them on the desk for any reason
· Students caught texting or looking at their phone will lose 5 pts of their attendance grade per infraction.
· Students who sleep will lose 5 pts (1/2 absence) or 10 pts if they sleep before and after the break.
ADDITIONAL PRACTICE AND STUDY MATERIAL
· Dos Mundos Website ( www.mhhe.com/dosmundos ) under “student edition”
· 501 Spanish verbs,
· English Grammar for Students of Spanish (available at the bookstore).
Student learning outcomes for Spanish 180:
The student will be able to:
1. Recognize and produce the Spanish language at the high-beginning level in the four primary areas of communication: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
2. Demonstrate a better understanding and appreciation of the cultures related to the Spanish language by comparing and contrasting them with the students’ own culture(s).
3. Use current technologies to further develop their language and cultural competencies.
