ADAC - Cost Comparison Among 20 Popular European City Destinations 2014
ADAC, Europe’s largest motor club, compared incidental holiday costs in European cities (accommodation and travel costs were not included).
The comparison was conducted in several different cities from12– 27 May 2014.
The study looked at normal prices for 20 typical products and services, including VAT (selected based on the needs of a middle-income tourist who is travelling independently to an unfamiliar city and takes a sightseeing tour).
Four categories of goods and services were compared:
- Tourist activities (tickets to the city’s main sights, sightseeing tour, public transportation ticket)
- Eating out (a dish of pasta, chips, Coca-Cola)
- Refreshments, snacks and similar (water, biscuits, postcards)
- Personal care products (toothbrush, toothpaste, headache tablets)
Four typical areas tourists visit were defined for each city:
- Area around the main train station
- Main tourist landmark areas
- Shopping centre
- Typical middle-class neighbourhood
Prices were recorded for each good at two businesses in each area of each city. The average was calculated from these eight values after excluding the highest and lowest values. Entrance tickets were calculated only once.
In countries outside the Eurozone, prices were converted based on the European Central Bank midrate on the first day of the test.
