Overview
The walk to the ‘Giant’s Grave’ (which can be seen from the pub car park) starts and finishes at this lovely wayside Inn. When we walked it we made arrangements with the hostelry staff to park in their car park and for twelve of us to eat there afterwards. The food was good and they also serve real ales.
The ‘Giant’s Grave’ is a long barrow upon Martinsell Hill. Local folklore states that if you run around the long barrow seven times you will wake the giant from his slumbers!

1. Begin in a southerly direction alongside the main road until you reach a minor cross road. Turn left into ‘Pound Lane’ follow this lane until it turns into a bridle path. Continue on along the bridle path. On your left you can look upwards at the ‘Giants Grave’. Continue on through the farm yard of ‘West Wick Farm’ shortly after this you will reach a junction.
2. Turn left following this new bridle path and begin a steady accent towards the higher ground and the ‘Giants Grave’. After about half a mile you will reach a metal gate into light woodland. Pass through the gate and take the left fork.
3. You are now beginning a steady climb. Soon you can see the glorious rolling down lands and the village of Oare nestling below you. (Here you can extend the walk by bearing right and following further footpath signs)
4. Continue left, through another gateway, follow the fence (keeping it on your right) along the crest of the hill to the ‘Giants Grave’ and to a trig point at the western point of the hill.
5. Descend the far side of the hill, continuing to follow the fence until you reach another small wooded area. Pass through the gate on your right and turn again immediately to your left to continue your path back to the bridleway where you began your walk.
6. On reaching the bridleway turn right and continue to the main road. Turn right again to reach your car and the welcoming sight of the pub and its country fare.
