Education has been the key to learning new subjects since we were children. The high school and college years of a student can be considered the most influential times in planning his or her goals in life. Class schedules, homework, tuition fees, internet access, and the libraries in high school and college are some of the general aspects that can be compared to one another.
High school and college have class schedules that students must attend in order to be counted present. High schools have a strict class schedule that does not change. The normal hours for most, if not all high schools, are during the morning and part of the early afternoon. This can help schools keep up with where each student is during that day. High school students have little to no choice on which classes they can attend. Colleges offer a wider variety of courses and provide times that are more suitablefor students to pick out the times they want. It also allows students to choose the classes they need in order to receive their degree. Since most graduating students and older adults have jobs, this can help them fit classes around their work schedule.
Another difference between high school and collegeis the amount of homework assigned for the students to complete. High school teachers generally give out homework in small portions with the occasion of a project here and there. Most of the homework handed out does not need much thought in order to complete it; such as busy work to keep students occupied with simple problems. College uses homework in the form of real world situations. It takes a great deal of time and effort in order for students to understand the material in a college environment in order for them to use it later on.
Tuition fees are also a big difference in a student’s education. High schools generally have small fees to cover the portion that is not covered by tax dollars. This is usually a flat fee for all students attending high school, and it does not vary based upon the students’ course load. At Wren High School, the fee was roughly $100 for my senior year. Colleges charge a much higher fee, more commonly known as tuition. Public high schools are funded by tax dollars because children up to a certain age must attend. High school students are not required to attend college. The government does provide assistance for students who want to attend college, but it is in the form of scholarships. Unlike the fixed fees of high school, college tuition varies depending on the courses students enroll in and the number of credit hours taken during a semester. Tri-County charges about $1,500 for students to attend for one semester, which is a big difference from the lower high school fees.
Another distinction between high school and college is the access to the internet. In high school, students keep up with hard copies of homework and other assignments. Very rarely do students submit electronic copies to their teachers. The schools do have websites of their own, but they are not as functional as college websites. Unlike high schools, colleges have much of their information online for students to access twenty-four hours a day. Being able to access the website from home can help students stay up to date with any school activities and complete any upcoming homework or projects for classes. Colleges also provide students with an email address so that they can stay in touch with professors and classmates. High schools do not supply email addresses for their students.
Providing libraries on campus gives students access to books and other materials needed for research papers and projects. It can also provide a quiet area for students to study or complete assignments. High school libraries can only be accessed by students and staff at that school. Unlike high school libraries, college libraries function much like a public library; anyone can access them. College librariesare set up so that students can access the library collection online to hold books and view other reading materials such as reference books and research databases. Instead of checking out a book, students can simply search the title of the book on the library website and have instant access to it without stepping a foot inside the library.
High school and college both provide education to students. Unlike high school, college is designed to help students and adults develop specific skills needed in the workplace. The flexibility of schedules allows students to choose classes around their work hours. College assignments are harder, and fees are higher. College provides a more functional internet environment for students, which includes online databases and other resources. These are some of the main differences between high school and college settings.
