Course description / Along with the undoubtedly very positive contributions of religiosity to the mental life of an individual, religiosity could sometimes be a risk factor for one's psycho-physical well-being. We encounter them by the persons of immature and extrinsic religiosity, under the scientific term of: ecclesiogenic neuroses.
Ecclesiogenic neuroses are immature forms of behavior. They include neurotic religiosity characterized by contradictory behavior: on the one hand: utopian naivety, rationalism on the other; from one side moral hiper-scrupulosity and from the other: laksism; aggression toward religious authorities and simultaneously their servility; need to be honored and to feel pity about themselves… All those forms of pathological religious behavior are corresponding to the disturbances in the structure and evolution of religion. They are present in different psychopathological types of infantile religion, such as: dependent religiousness, religiosity that rewards, substitute religiosity, religious faith out of fear, masochistic religiousness, hypomanic religiosity, obsessive religiosity, neurotic religious conversion.
Pointing to these potential religious aberrations, we want to make clear that religious life does not cause psychoneurosis, but the neurotic himself is channeling his personal, psychological disturbances in the faith and her specific religious content, which becomes their explicit comments.
Thatfor, the aim of course is to establish the right perception of true religion, which connects the believers with God, through mature spiritual, prayerful and moral life, which strengthen his inner world influencing the positive impact on mental health, contrary to distorted images of God/self/morality, incorrect forms of prayer/sacrifice/penance/waiver, exaggerated scrupulous feelings of guilt and other forms of neurotic-church-induced events.
The course concludes by pointing out the positive religious values and guidelines how to pastorally respond to the presented problems, because at the end, the Church and the unity of God's people depend on the degree of integration of each mature member, and the healthy spiritual life cannot be built on negativity, but on ideals.
