Date of Lecture:Thursday 21st January2016

Aims(bullet points)
  • To understand the different classes of lung infections
by anatomic location, by aetiologic organism, by clinical syndrome, and by underlying susceptibility
  • To understand the different severities of lung infections
  • To understand the management strategies both supportive and specific

Session Objectives(bullet points)
  • To review the anatomy of the respiratory tract
  • To review the clinical presentation of pneumonia, bronchitis, and upper respiratory tract infections

Relevance to Medical Practice(bullet points)
• This lecture forms an introduction to a more detailed series, as respiratory tract infection is amongst the most common and important of infectious problems in all of medicine, and a thorough knowledge of it is required of any practising doctor.
Lecture Outline(A short piece of text outlining what the lecture covers - see example below)
This session should be viewed as an outline and introduction for what is to follow. It will revise respiratory tree anatomy, and localise the different infectious problems. Prominent case vignettes will be discussed, and their risk factors highlighted.
The wide range of diagnostic tests for lung infections will be introduced, and a similarly extensive list of causative agents given.
An overview of management strategy and specific details of potential antibiotic choices will be given, although much of this will be covered in later talks as well.
