The following case study pertains to QUESTION 3 and QUESTION 4. Read it carefully and answer the questions that follow:
The Department of Agriculture is doing well to empower women by honouring those in the agriculture industry. The national winners of the farmer's award, Makgoro Mannya and Wendy Ramokgopa, are the partners of the Ditubatse Business Enterprise Project.
They are specialising in farming mangoes and producing atchaar, which is sold throughout South Africa and also exported to Botswana, Europe and Madagascar. The company has employed 200 labourers, two (2) administrators, two (2) finance managers, one (1) marketing manager, one (1) human resource manager and two (2) production managers. Most workers in this organisation belong to the Farmer's Workers Union.
Mannya is the director and Ramokgopa is the deputy director of the project. They said one of the challenges they experienced was when the workers embarked on an illegal strike, demanding a 10% living wage. During this period the company faced a decline in production. Exports also suffered.
They also said that farming is hard work and people regard it as a man's job. They said to be successful in this business, hardwork, perseverance and commitment are the main factors needed. [Taken from: Pretoria News, 17 September 2007]
