BAIR

The Beatson Advanced Imaging Resource (BAIR) is located on level 1 of the Beatson Institute. It is a 9 room suite covering over 200 square metres of floor space. The facility is equipped with state of the art systems formicroscopy and flow cytometry. The service offers training and support in all aspects of these technologies.

Scheduler Access For Microscopy.

E-Mail and arrange to meet with Margaret O’Prey or David Strachan. We will arrange a convenient time to give you an introduction to the BAIR facility and after training is complete access to the Beatson Scheduler.

How to get training and Scheduler Access

Before you will be given access to the equipment booking scheduler you will first have to receive training on the equipment you want to use from a member of BAIR staff. You cannot get training from a member of your own group.

Confocal Microscope

Training session 1: 2hr with BAIR samples. Assistant required for the first 2hr training. This session will cover the basic principals of Confocal Microscopy and how to capture and optimize an image.

Training session 2: 2hr with your own samples or BAIR samples. Assistant required for 1-2hr depending on your microscopy experience. This will be a more hands on session where the confocal will be set up and optimally for your samples.

Training session3: 1hour with assistant. After this session depending on your level and experience we will give you access to the scheduler.

Training session 4: This session is required for any advanced application. (FRET, FRAP, Z stacks and 3D imaging. Live cell imaging.) It is also required if you have not used the confocal for a 6 months period as a refresher session.

Timelapes Microscopes.

Training session 1: Bring your own samples and book the system for the desired timelapse time. Book an assistant the first 1hr of the run. Also book an assistance for 1hr at the end of your TL run to assist you with data transfer and direction on how to proceed with any analysis you may wish to do.

Training session 2: Bring your own samples and book the system for the desired timelapes run time. Book an assistant the first 1hr of the run.

Training session 3: This is a session for any advanced imaging applications or for re training if you have not used the system for longer than a 6 month period.

Fluorescent Microscopes

Training session 1: 1hr training session with an assistant. This can be with your own samples or BAIR control samples.

Users should note this is a shared facility so please be considerate when booking the equipment. Do not book for longer than required. Make sure you appear on time for your bookings. Last minute cancellations are strongly discouraged.

BAIR Computing Resources

The BAIR facility has a computing suite in room 129 on level 1. These systems can be booked via the scheduler.(we can give you access to this category) .Some of the software that we have available for use in this suite is listed below. If you require training you must book an assistant along with the computer you wish to use. Software dongles are required for access to some of the software in this computing suite. These dongles must never be removed from the Bair facility.

Facility Rules

Rules

No unauthorised member of staff should be using the facility.

All staff must receive training before using the facility.

Individual group members should not be training new members of group staff.

Failure to appear for your bookingcould result in you losing your slot. We will apply a 30min rule (more than 30min late and other users can take up your booking).

Lack of care or abuse of the equipment could result in loss of facility access.

Follow all instrument standard operating procedures. Leave the facility clean and tidy as you find it.

Please book assistants at least 24hr in advance where possible so they can plan there day.

You must store and keep your raw data in a safe place. It is important to keep all your raw data and images as it may be required for publications!!!! Transfer to your own network area where the data will be backed up by IT.

Do not leave images on the hard drive of the computers. Any data found on our facility computers will be deleted.

Sign up to the BAIR user email list. This is important as all information about the facility will be sent out via this email account. Details of how to do this is on the last page of this document.

No food or drink is allowed in theequipment rooms.

Please report any problems you have with the equipment to the facility staff. The equipment is QCT on a weekly basis but intermittent faults can be missed.

BAIR Facility Microscope Care

The microscope Facility is cared for and maintained by the members of the BAIR facility staff. All the microscopes are QC tested on a regular basis to ensure they perform optimally as possible for your sessions on the systems.

Staff should take special care when changing objectives and stage inserts on our microscope systems. This is the time when most lenses are damaged by users. Lenses should never be left with oil on then and users must ensure that they are confident in how to clean the lenses correctly. (Please see BAIR Hand out and ask for training form BAIR staff if you are not sure how to do this)

Risk Assessment Forms and BAIR web.

RA forms are all available on the BAIR website. You must read the appropriate RA form before using any of the BAIR equipment. Information on laser safety is also available on the BAIR website.

The BAIR website (bair.beatson.gla.ac.uk) also contains all the facility SOPs.
