Anandita, Anirban in last four:
Guwahati: Favourite Anandita Chakraborty of South Eastern Railway advanced to the semi final of the Railway Table Tennis Tournament being played at the Maligaon Railway Stadium here. In the quarter-final played on August 30, Anandita brushed aside the challenge of Anushree Saha of Eastern Railway 4-1. However, favourite Anirban Nandi of South Eastern Railway had a tough time in getting the better of G Jeetendra of South Central Railway.
Three in top scorers' race:
Guwahati: three footballer are jointly in the race to lift the highest scorer title in the Narayan Chandra Mahajan super Division Football League which will conclude on August 31. The football secretary of the GSA Hem Das said that the three footballers-Padum Rabha (Dynamo), Utpal Das(Jewel Star) and Six Bearth(Dynamo) are jointly leading the table scoring eight goals each Amulya Das of Assam Police Blues and Utpal Basumatari of the ASEB also have an outside chance to grab the title but in that case they have to score at least two goals in their last match.
School, college tennis from Oct 4:
Guwahati: The All Assam Inter-School and Inter-College Tennis championship will be held at Jorhat from October four. Apart from the team event, there will be individual events too in both the tournaments, which is being organised by the All Assam tennis association. Although there will be no age bar in the college championship, in the school championship, however, there will be two age categories, U-18 and U-14. The winners and the runners-up will be awarded cash prizes along with trophies and certificates. The last date for filling in the entry form entry has been fixed as September 27.
SER, CR win team events:
Guwahati: South Eastern Railway and Central Railway on August 28 emerged champions in the men's and women's event of the 52nd All India Railway Table Tennis meet, which is being played at the Railway Stadium, Maligaon.
Dynamo finish league on winning note:
Guwahati: Former champion Dynamo on August 28 finished their assignment in the Narayan Chandra Mahajan Football League finishing third in the points table. Dynamo kept their very best for their last match and made a mincemeat of the NFRSC defence pumping in five goals at the Nehru Stadium. It was also the last match for NFRSC in the super League. They finished very poorly, by their standard, collecting 10 points from same number of matches.
ACA meeting in Barpeta on August 29:
Guwahati: The governing body meeting of the ACA will be held on August 29 at Barpeta. Sources have said that a couple of important decisions will be taken in the meeting including the selection of a coach for the Ranji squad. He said that Abdul Jabbar Khan, the Ranji coach last year, will probably be appointed as the coach of the U-19 team.
BCCI reschedule CK Nayadu Trophy:
Guwahati: BCCI has rescheduled the fixture of the Col. C K Nayadu U-22 Cricket Tournament. It will now be held from January 20. The final round will take place from February 20.
GSA names soccer team:
Guwahati: The Gauhati sports Association announced its team for the Sub-Junior Inter-District Football Championship currently underway at Barama in Nalbari district.
Rly TT from August 26:
Guwahati: The 52nd All India Railway Table Tennis Championship, organised by the NF Railway Sports Association, will be held at the NFRSA Stadium, Maligaon from August 26. There will be 16 teams in the men's section while eight team in the women's section from various Indian Railway zones will vie for honours in the championship which will conclude on August 31. National- ranked players like Anirban Nandi, Anindita Chakraborty, Minu Dhawan are likely to take part in the championship.
AP Blues down NFRSC:
Guwahati: Assam Police Blues took an important step towards winning the Narayan Chandra Mahajan Super division football League title when they defeated NFRSC 2-0 in the Nehru Stadium Ground here on August 24. It will now be ASEB or the Blues who would be walking away with the trophy when they clash in the all walking match on August 31.
Sportsmen to be honoured on Aug 29:
Guwahati: Former sportsmen and organisers who have been selected for the one- time sports award for the year 2003-04 will be felicitated in a function to be held on August 29, the birthday of the legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand, at the RG Baruah Sports Complex. The Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Department while informing it to the media said that 16 players and an organiser will be honoured on the day.
Maharana stay in hunt:
Guwahati: Maharana have almost assured themselves of a berth in the next year's Super Division Soccer League defeating Jewel Star 2-0 in the Nehru Stadium here on August 22. With this victory, Maharana have collected seven points which took them to the sixth position in the points table. It was a do-or-die battle for the once-premier club Maharana and they did just when it mattered most.
Anjali, Pallav, Pizza, Suranjan hog limelight:
Guwahati: Anjali Kalita, Pallav Deka, Pizza Bharali and Suranjan Bhubora won a golden double each in the fourth All Assam Ranking Open Badminton Championship which concluded on August 22 at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium.
Young Blue, City Police in drawn tie:
Guwahati: Young Blue and City Police played a 1-1 draw in the Sekhar Goswami A Division Football League in the Nehru Stadium here on August 22. Bipul Rabha put city Police ahead in the 10th minute of the match. Young Blue restored parity in the 57th minute through Dhaneswar Daimary.
New body for soccer referees selected:
Guwahati: Zarik Ahamed and Bipin Chandra Deka will be the new president and secretary respectively of the Guwahati Referee Association were selected on August 22 in a meeting held in the AFA office.
ASEB thrash NFRSC, stay in hunt:
Guwahati: ASEB maintained its smooth run towards the Narayan Chandra Mahajan Super League title when they defeated NFRSC 4-0 in the Nehru Stadium here on August 21. With this win, ASEB once again romped to top of the points table. It was the eight match for ASEB and they are now jointly leading the table with Assam Police Blues collecting 22 points.
Mousam, Kaveri annex Yonex titles:
Guwahati: Mousam Bora and Kaveri Phukan lifted the U-10 boys and girls singles title respectively in the Yonex All Assam Ranking Open Badminton championship which is currently in progress at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium.
Ujjal Barua dead:
Former sports organiser Ujjal Barua passed away in the night on August 19 after a brief illness. He was the former treasure of the GSA. A condolence meeting was held in the evening on August 20 in the GSA office. The flag of the Association remained at half mast throughout the day.
Konwar wrecks Hyderabad:
Guwahati: A devastating spell from Arlen Konwar gave Assam a vital first innings lead of 40 runs against Hyderabad in the Buchi Babu Cricket Tournament being played at Chennai. Arlen claimed seven wickets giving away 85 runs and Hyderabad were folded in their first innings at 206.
AP blues continue golden run:
Guwahati: Assam Police Blues run in the Narayan Chandra Mahajan Super League title remained uninterrupted as they easily over came Dynamo's challenge to register a convincing 4-1 win at the Nehru Stadium here on August 20.the winners were leading 2-0 in the first half.
Dingko wants to complete in 2008 Olympics:
Guwahati: Although his career has been threatened by persistent injury, yet the fighter that he is, he has not lost hope of making it to the ring once again and dominate opponents. Dingko Singh, the Bankok Asian Games gold medalist was in the city on August 20 to release a book Uttar Purbanchalor Mahan Olympianxokol, written by sports journalist Bipul Barman. Dingko said that he wanted to end his career on a high note by taking part in the Beijing Olympic games of 2008.
A Division league begins from August 19:
Guwahati: FCI will take on SAI in the inaugural match of the second Sekhar Goswami A Division Football League to played at the Nehru Stadium here on August 19. Altogether eight teams are taking part in the league. The other participating teams are: rising Eleven, Royal Sports, Sunrise, Rajbari, Young Blue and City Police.
Yonex badminton begins:
Guwahati: The Yonex All Assam Ranking Badminton Tournament got under way at the Kanaklata Stadium here on august 18. The meet, organised by the Gauhati Sports Association, is open for players of all categories. Around 200 players from different parts of the State are taking part in the championship. The meet was inaugurated on August 18 by former player Pradip Chaliha.
NSA gearing up for Independence Cup:
Guwahati: Recovering the devastating flood that wreaked havoc all over the state, Nagaon Sports Association has started their preparation for the Independence Cup Football Tournament, which will begin in the middle of next month. The host association has already sent invitation letter to the some of the major clubs of the country.
Assam exposed in KSCA tourney:
Guwahati: Assam was exposed completely in the first match of the exposure tour in the KSCA Tournament in Bangalore by Indian Airlines. Indian Airlines scored an imposing 397 for on the opening day. The four wickets were shared by Satish, Parvez Aziz, Abu Naschim Ahamed and R K Yadav.
Maharana win crucial tie:
Guwahati: Maharana Athletic Club kept their hopes floating of staying in the Narayan Chandra Mahajan Super Division Football League when they defeated Young Amateur 2-0 at the Nehru stadium here on August 13. It is first win in the league for Maharana and will definitely give a sigh of relief to the club and its supporters as the threat of relegation was hanging around its neck. Young Amateur, going by their performance, are sure to be relegated unless they pull out something special in the remaining matches.
Arm-wrestling camp on August 13:
Guwahati: An arm-wrestling camp will be held on August 13 at Bishnu Nirmala Bhawan to select the State team for the 28th Senior National Championship to held at Puri from August 22.
M'laya Open taekwondo:
Guwahati: The eleventh Meghalaya Open Taekwondo Championship was held recently at Shillong at in the Tirot Sing Stadium.
ASEB unhappy with GTC's decision:
Guwahati: Walkover in themselves in local leagues be it football or any other sport are no big deal provided a team has the reason to do so, but anything beyond this is bound to raise many an eyebrows. But the way a team like GTC showed their unwillingness to play their match against the ASEB on August 12, surprised many quarters. Many soccer lovers of the city including the official of the ASEB, felt hurt and wanted GSA to change its constitution to avoid such incidents in future.
Neetumoni to lead Assam:
Guwahati: Neetumoni Saikia will lead Assam in the 17th Sub Junior Girls National hockey Championship to be held at Kapurthala from August 17. Gita Khaklari and Girish Baruah will accompany the team as coach and manager respectively.
Assam Police Blue down NFRSC:
Guwahati: Assam Police Blue registered their fifth consecutive win defeating NFRSC 2-0 in the Narayan Chandra Mahajan Football league played at the Nehru Stadium here on August 10. The winner was leading 1-0 in the first half. Kunja Gayari drew the first blood in the 32nd minutes of the match while Digen Das increased the margin in the 63rd minutes.
Three points to GTC:
Guwahati: GSA awarded three points and three goals to the Guwahati Town Club as they were protesting against Young Amateur for Alleged fielding of players without GSA proper registration. It may be mentioned here that Guwahati Town Club and Young Amateur played a goalless draw in their league encounter.
Assam to take on Bihar:
Guwahati: Assam will begin its campaign in the U-15 Polly Umrigar Trophy with the match against Bihar from October 25. The three-day match will be hosted by the Bihar Cricket Association.
Kamrup rural judo body formed:
Guwahati: Kamrup District Jodo Association (Rural) was formed recently with Naser Gul Khan as president and Kamal Saikia as its secretary. Asima Saikia has been give the post treasurer.
AP Blues drub Dynamo:
Guwahati: Dynamo' title hope suffered a severe jolt on August 8 at the hands of Assam Police Blues when the title contender suffered a 0-3 defeat at the Nehru Stadium here on August 8. After a barren first half, the police men pumped in all the three goals in the second half starting with a Digen Das goal in the 58th minute. Amulya Das and Rabijit Jigdang increased the margin in the 78th and 89th minutes respectively. With this win, Assam Police Blues have strengthened their lead on top of the points table. Dynamo went into the match under pressure after their reversal against strong contender ASEB and knowing full well that another defeat would hurl them out of contention. They displayed a spiritless football and disappointed their fans.
New dates for Nurul Amin Trophy:
Guwahati: Assam Cricket Association on August 8 announced new dates for the semi final of the Nurul Amin Cricket Tournament to be held at Nagaon. The date for the second semifinal between Railway and Nagaon is September 18 and 19. The winners will meet Guwahati in the final to be held from September 21.
Bhagwati win silver, Brazil berth:
Guwahati: Prahlad Chandra Bhagwati of NEEPCO won the silver medal in the Masters' Heavy Weight category of the 28th Senior National Arm wrestling Championship currently in progress at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. The gold medal in the category went to J Patowary. With this win, Bhagwati has assured himself a place in the national squad which will participate in the World Arm Wrestling Championship to be held at Brazil.
