From Mel BUCK: Found a list of marriage documents

from the Province of Pennsylvania and there is a marriage license for

Isaac Buck to Hannah Hicks on May 7, 1775. That makes it impossible

for them to be the parents of Jonathan BUCK.

1. Rev. Jonathan BUCK b: 12 Jan 1755.[1] [2] probably in Cumberland Co., PA as Bedford Co. was created from Cumberland Co. in March 1771.

BedfordCounty was formed from CumberlandCounty in 1771. BedfordCounty is sometimes called the “Mother County of Western Pennsylvania," because Western Pennsylvania was all originally part of BedfordCounty. 25 counties and parts of

7 others were created from BedfordCounty.

m: 16 Mar 1775 in BedfordCo., PA. (Source: LDS microfiche)In 1776, he was living in Colerain township, Bedford county, Pennsylvania.[3] Also in Colerain township were Thomas Buck, and Chiniah, Abraham & Bethuel Covalt. It is thought Thomas Buck, may have been a brother, although McClain, in "A History of Putnam County, TN" names Jonathan's father as Thomas. The Covalts were probably Jonathan's brothers-in-law.

Jonathan was a private 4th class in Capt. George Enslow's Company of Bedford County Militia and later was a Frontier Ranger, serving with his brother-in-law, Pvt. Abraham Covalt, in Capt. Samuel Paxton's Ranging Frontier Company. His name was on a pay roster for the amount of £5. 5 shillings, 0 pence, and on the pay roster of "Rangers on the Frontiers 1778-1783." His name also appeared on lists of "Those Who Received Depreciation Pay as per Canceled Certificates," and as a private in Pennsylvania's Continental Line. Jonathan received a land warrant of 200 acres for his Revolutionary War service on October 28, 1785. [17] In February of 1789 his name was among those appearing on a "List of the Inhabitants of Milford Township Subject to the Performance of Militia Duties." Jonathan Buck was living on 28 Oct 1785, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.16 On this date, he received a bounty land warrant for 200 acres of land for his Revolutionary War service. In December of 1787 Pennsylvania became the second state (after Delaware) to ratify the constitution of the newly formed United States of America. He was living on 5 Feb 1789 in Milford township, Bedford county, Pennsylvania[8] where his name was among those appearing on a "List of the Inhabitants of Milford Township Subject to the Performance of Militia Duty."

On 10 Feb 1789 Jonathan sold land in Bedford Co., but remained in the area since his son Ephraim is said to have been born there in July of 1791. The family probably moved into the Watauga area of present day eastern Tennessee about 1792. Jonathan & Zuriah's next child, Abigail, is thought to have been born there in January of 1793.

Jonathan Buck appeared on the census in 1790 in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.[18] In the household was:

1 male head of family (Jonathan)

4 males under 16 (Thomas, 12; Elijah, 8; Jonathan, 4; & Bethuel, 2)

4 females (Zuriah; Elizabeth, 14; Susannah, 10; & Barbara, 6)

By 1793 Jonathan was living in Washington county, North Carolina.[19,20] This area became Washington county, Tennessee upon Tennessee's admission to the union in 1797. The early deeds of Washington county are in Tennessee records. Jonathan and Zuriah first settled on Buffalo Creek near the fork of the WataugaRiver. On July 26, 1794 Jonathan paid Joseph "& his wife, Elizabeth" Tipton $833 for 313 acres of land located "at the confluence of WataugaRiver and Gap Creek" in Washington county. This land was located in Carter county upon its creation from Washington in 1796. In September of 1822 Jonathan sold the property to James P. Taylor for $3000.

Baptist Minister, licensed 1803. He had served the SinkingCreekBaptistChurch for nearly 30 years, when in September of 1827, the Church elders met "to take notice of Some Conduct that old Br Jonathan Buck is Guilty of." Two months passed before they met again to address reports of Jonathan's "intoxication of liquor" and "making use of profane language." They determined "this church Consider the Conduct unbecoming a preacher of the Gospel" and revoked his membership "untill a Gospel recantation."

Apparently Jonathan was not properly repentant, because shortly thereafter he removed into the area of middle Tennessee now in Putnam county. His farmland is within the city limits of Cookeville, the county seat.

Moved westward with Abraham, Isaac and Jonathan Jr. after his wife died.(cbt) Jonathan is on the 1830 Jackson Co., Census.

Jonathan died 19 Mar 1831, in Jackson or White Co., (DAR says both) now Putnam Co., TN as Putnam Co., was

formed in 1854 from portioons of White, Jackson, Overton and DeKalb Counties.

He was buried in the BuckFamilyCemetery, on Mullins Farm, (cbt) Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN.(jg) . (Jeri Garner has Family Bible records for Jonathan and Zura and map of Jonathan's land.(jg)

Bur: Buck Cemetery, Putnam Co., TN.( Cynthia say she died in Carter Co., TN and is not buried in Putnam Co., with Jonathan).(Per Mary Willis, She died November 12, 1819 in Carter county, Tennessee.[1,2] Some Buck genealogies list Zuriah was buried in the Buck Family Cemetery with her husband. Since she died in 1819, and Jonathan did not sell his Carter county land until 1827, it is thought she probably died in Carter county. It has not been determined if Jonathan left Carter county before the sale of his land).
