New resources from the CHFG

To date 2013 has seen unprecedented attention nationwide on patient safety. The publication of the Francis Report in February, and the subsequent set up of Don Berwick's national advisory group has provided a focus and a commitment for change in the NHS. There are many elements of this work that have a human factors grounding, and alongside the National Quality Board Human Factors subgroup we anticipate that there will be a greater appreciation of the role human factors can play in improving reliability, efficiency and safety throughout the NHS. The CHFG has recognised this momentum, and has been developing resources that will support boards and frontline staff in understanding and recognising the benefits of a human factors approach. A resource for Boards: Getting to grips with human factors
We have long recognised that in order for human factors to be truly embedded in healthcare there needs to be buy in at all levels, from the frontline all the way up to the Board. This new resource is specifically targeted at boards and aims to raise awareness of human factors and the impact the discipline can have. Martin Bromiley will be officially launching this resource at Patient Safety Congress in Birmingham later this week, and is available for download from the CHFG website here.
Volume 2 of the Implementing Human Factors in Healthcare 'How to' guide
We are pleased to announce that the follow on volume to the original 'How to' guide is now available for download from our website. The original 'How to' guide was published in 2009 and was very well received. The follow on volume aims to add to the original, providing more information and case studies. This too is available from the CHFG website here.

Thank you for taking the time to read through our newsletter. We hope that the resources we have produced will provide support to you and your organisations going forward, and we will be keen to hear your stories and your reactions, in particular any learning that we can share with our members. Like us, I'm sure you are keen to see the outcomes of the Berwick advisory group and the National Quality Board Human Factors subgroup, but we are confident that there will continue to be a growing appreciation of the role for human factors in healthcare.
