Volleyball Test Review Sheet
Grades 5-8
DPL/PE Volleyball Rules: I have explained the DPL rules to all the students while we reviewed for the test; however, as an educator I had to modify or change some of the rules slightly to enhance the most out of all the students in class to keep everyone active as much as possible with the least amount of injuries.
THE SERVE:
1. Server must serve from behind the restraining line (end line) until after contact. JV(5-6) serve line which is closer than Varsity (7-8).
2. Ball may be served underhand or overhand.
3. Ball must be clearly visible to opponents before the serve.
4. Once served, the ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for a point.
5. First game serve is determined by coin toss performed by the official. The second game is based on the team who did not serve the first game. If there is a 3rd game then the official will do another coin toss to see who serves first.
6. Serve must be returned by a bump only. No setting, spiking, or attacking a serve. (Restrictions of “setting” a serve are not contained in DPL rules. Setting is not considered an offensive maneuver)
SCORING:
1. Rally score will be used to 25 points.
2. There will be a point scored on every score of the ball.
3. Offense will score on a defense miss or a defense out of bounds hit.
4. Defense will score on an offensive miss or an offensive out of bounds hit.
5. Game must be won by 2 points.
ROTATION:
1. The defensive team will rotate each time they win the serve.
2. Players shall rotate in a clockwise manner.
3. There shall be 6 players on each side for grades 5-8; which the PE rules there is always a
constant rotation in all grade levels due to letting all the students play equal time and
staying active.
4. JV(5th-6th)- there is a constant rotation to substitute all players on the team, Varsity(7th-8th)
- substitutions are only for certain players and they have to be substituted for the same
people they went in for. There are 25 subs allowed per game in varsity. Again for the PE
classes, all classes had a constant rotation.
PLAYING THE GAME (VOLLEY):
1. Maximum of three hits per side.
2. Player may not hit the ball twice in succession (A block is not considered a hit).
3. Ball may be played off the net during a volley or play of game but not on a serve.
4. A ball touching a boundary line is in bounds.
5. A legal hit is contact with the ball by a player body above and including the waist which
does not allow the ball to visibly come to a rest. However the DPL rule states that any
body part can be used, this is one of the rules that needed to be modified and is legal in
the high school NFHS rules.
6. If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered one play and the
players involved may not participate in the next play. The DPL states that all players
would be able to hit the ball next however according to the PE rules, this is another rule
that had to be modified for the purposes of the students.
7. A player must not block or attack a serve.
8. Switching positions will be allowed only between front line players after a serve. Before
the serve is hit the other team has to be in the proper rotation.
BASIC VIOLATIONS:
1. Stepping on or over the line on a serve.
2. Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully.
3. Hitting the ball illegally (Carrying, Palming, Throwing, etc.).
4. Touches of the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play. If the ball is driven
into the net with such force that it causes the net to contact an opposing player, no foul
will be called, and the ball shall continue to be in play.
5. Reaching over the net, except under these conditions:
a. when executing a follow-through.
b. when blocking a ball which is in the opponents court but is being returned ( the
blocker must not contact the ball until after the opponent who is attempting to
return the ball makes contact). Except to block the third play.
6. Reaches under the net with any body part during play.
7. Failure to serve in the correct order/taking too long to serve after the whistle blows.
8. Blocks or spikes from a position which is clearly not behind the 10-foot line while in a back
row position.
