Introduction

In this course students will begin to develop skills in Algebra. Emphasis will be placed on developing good basic mathematic skills, which are essential to the study of algebra. Students will solve and graph linear equations and inequalities. In this course students will combine these techniques with problem solving strategies to solve application problems.

The student should be able to recognize, apply, compare, and justify the properties of geometric figures in a variety of situations. This year you will study the following:

·  Adding & Subtracting Real Numbers (Number line)

·  Solving Equations and Inequalities

·  Graphing Equations and Inequalities

·  Solving and Graphing Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities

·  Operations of Polynomials

·  Pythagorean Theorem

·  Ratios and Proportions

·  Area and Volume Formulas

Materials Needed

You will need to have the following for class:

·  Textbook (provided)

·  Paper

·  Notebook

·  Pencils

·  Straight Edge (ruler)

·  Calculator

Grades

Grades for each quarter will be based on:

30% chapter test scores

50% assignments, quizzes, project scores

20% final

The grading scale for assignments, tests, and overall grade is:

100% - 90% A

89% - 80% B

79% - 70% C

69% - 60% D

Below 59% F

Assignments

All assignments will be due at the beginning of the next class period unless otherwise told. Assignments contribute to part of your grade.

Late Work

If your homework is given to me anytime after class is over, I will write “late” on your paper and you will not be given full credit. This is better than a 0%.

Final

The final is given at the end of each semester. The 2nd semester final is comprehensive. Which means you will need to know the basics of what you have learned all year. The final is worth 20% of your grade.

Show me this syllabus before the final begins at the end of each semester and you will receive 5 bonus points on your final.

Make-up Work

This is quoted from the Student Handbook.

A student will have one day to make arrangements for work that was missed. Each teacher can then set the due date for the make-up work. All work turned in after the due date will receive credit as determined by the teacher.

Expectations and Consequences

These are posted at all times around the classroom.

·  All rules listed in the Cherryvale HS Handbook WILL be in effect.

·  Respect all people, equipment, property in the classroom.

·  Always be prepared by bringing all materials to class (paper, pencil, book, etc.)

·  Be in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings.

·  Food, drinks or candy are not allowed in the classroom.

·  Students are to remain seated until the teacher dismisses them; the ringing of the bell does not automatically dismiss the class.

·  Language should be school appropriate.

·  Ask before leaving the classroom during class.

·  If your name is not written on an assignment you submit, you will not receive credit for that assignment.

The consequence for breaking the rules will be left up to the teacher. If expectations are not being met repeatedly a meeting with Mr. Owens or Mr. Lambdin may be in order, or a call to your parent.

Detentions

If you receive a detention your name will be written on the board by my desk. This is so you and I can keep track. If you come back to the next class and your name is still on the board, you will need to make it up that day. If you do not show up for the detention after that day, you will have ISS the next day!!!!
