Cadet courses on offer at Covenham Sailing Club
Brief outline of courses on offer for cadets – Age 8 to 16
All courses include a variety of sailing based games to encourage practice afloat!

Stage 1 - £45
· Introducing you to sailing
· Assumed Knowledge – None
· Duration – 1 or 2 days depending on age
· Minimum age – 8
· Course content - Can steer when sailing and being towed, Can steer on a reach and go about (reach to reach), Understands the effect of basic boat controls, Understands the basic principles of stopping, controlling speed, getting out of irons and sailing games
· Ability after course -Able to sail across the wind under instruction
Stage 2 - £45
· Beginning to sailing
· Assumed Knowledge – Stage 1
· Duration –2 days
· Minimum age – 8
· Course content - Can sail a shallow triangle across the wind under supervision (gybing optional), Understands the principles of the five essentials, Effective crewing, Returning to a jetty.
· Ability after course -Able to sail in all directions, leaving and returning to a jetty under supervision
Stage 3 - £45
· Competent sailing
· Assumed Knowledge – Stage 2 and a seasons experience
· Duration –2 days
· Minimum age – 9
· Course content - The five essentials, Sailing on a triangular course, Tacking upwind, Gybing from a training run, Coming alongside a moored boat, Prepare for and take up tow from powered craft, Picking up a mooring, Understands race starting procedure and course
· Ability after course – The stage three sailors is a competent sailor who is able to sail in all directions, leaving and returning to a jetty competently and independently in modest conditions
Stage 4 - £45
· Improving your sailing
· Assumed Knowledge – Stage 3 and a seasons experience
· Duration –2 days
· Minimum age – 10
· Course content - Stage 3 sailing manoeuvres in crewed boat, Communicate effectively as helm or crew, Effective 5 essentials including tell-tales as helm or crew, recover a man overboard, return to a beach jetty or mooring safely in any wind direction, Beaufort scale, sea sailing theory.
· Ability after course – The stage four sailors is a competent sailor who is able to sail in all directions, leaving and returning to a jetty competently and independently in most conditions. The stage four sailors are ready to progress onto the advanced modules.
