CIRCULATION ASSISTANT

9.5 hours per week plus 9-15 hours per month

Description: The Circulation Assistant works at all of the library’s three service desks to provide timely, courteous service to patrons. Serves as a friendly contact person with the public. Answers questions and circulates books. Each service point respectively supervised by the Circulation Librarian, Children’s Librarian, and Young Adult Librarian. Position reports to the Library Director.

Responsibilities:

Staffs the adult circulation desk one day per week.

Staffs the children’s desk one evening per week.

Staffs the teen room as needed, including one to two Saturdays per month.

·  Checks library materials in and out

·  Answers the telephone and refers calls to other staff as needed

·  Handles reference questions or refers them to the Reference Librarian

·  Registers new borrowers, keeps patron addresses up-to-date

·  Makes borrowers’ replacement cards

·  Empties book drops

·  Helps patrons use computer, photocopier, microfilm reader/printers, and magnifier.

·  Helps patrons use e-readers and download books

·  Handles fines, fees, donations, and printer/copier income

·  Takes reserve requests, locates reserved items, notifies patrons reserves are ready

·  Receives requests for interlibrary loan

·  Shelves books and reads shelves as needed

Attends biweekly staff meetings

Attends conferences and workshops as time and interest permit

Makes suggestions for improved library practices and operations

Reports problems to the Library Director

Carries out other tasks as requested by the Circulation Librarian, Children’s Librarian, or Young Adult Librarian.

Qualifications:

Friendly, helpful, non-judgmental

Capable of working independently and as part of a team

Interested in books, reading, and libraries

Impeccable dedication to excellent customer service for patrons of all ages

Ability to represent the library with tact and professionalism

Comfortable with general computer, office software, and internet use

2 years library experienced preferred

Vermont Public Library Certificate (or working toward the same) preferred
