After last week's successful End Polio Now Fundraiser Cocktail Party, we managed to raise a total of $3,217.20 on ticket sales, auction items, and donations. Our thanks to all who came along to support this wonderful cause. It was a time of much hilarity, lovely venue, excellent Jazz trioand great food and drinks. Our thanks to our sponsors: Stamford Grand, Emma Hack Gallery, Blackwell Funerals, Elder Fine Art, Red Orchid Designs, RSM Bird Cameron, the Sullivan Family and Wotherspoon family. With just 35 attendees, this was a great result.
Club Christmas Lunch - Sunday 7 December 12.00noon for 12.30pm lunch start
This year we are keeping our Club Christmas Lunch down to a very realistic cost of just $10 per person. We decidedthat a lunch on Sunday 7 December, 12.00noon for a 12.30pm lunch start would bebetter option that our usualbreakfast. After much deliberation, we have decided to hold it at Dean and Pam Sullivan's place (an email to members with their address will be sent out this week). Thank you Pam and Dean for offering to hold this event this year; and we are keeping Angus and Helen's offer of holding it at their property in Kangarilla to a more suitable time (ie out of fire danger season and when the grass will be green instead of burnt umber!).
So, the $5 per person will pay for your meat, onions, bread etc - and attendees will be asked to liaise with Pam (m 0415 244 855) re bringing a salad, sweet, dips/crackers, nuts or other nibbles so that we get a well balanced spread. Attendees can also bring their own drinks (wine, soft drink, beers etc) to drink or share.
In the spirit of Christmas, we also ask that you bring a fun-loving, wrappedunder-$5 Kris Kringle gift per person - as Pam has a special Kris Kingle twist for all attendees. Feel free to bring your partners, family, friends - but you need to let Pam know the numbers attending so that we can arrange the right number of chairs and the amount of meat etc for guests.
So, this means our meeting of 4 December will be cancelled and we'll have the Club Christmaslunch on 7 Decemberin its place. Pleaseconfirm witheither Pam or Yvette (m 0419 043 042) of your availability to attend the Club Christmas lunch and what food item you can supply.
Christmas giving to the needy
Next week - don't forget to bring your $20 donations per member for "Cash for Cans" - a project we've been undertaking each Christmas for those in need of foodstuffs at this expensive time of year. Our combined donations go to our local Hutt Street IGA supermarket which provides tinned and other goods at wholesale prices - and the packages are then distributed by the Moore Street Centre in the city. Please pay to Paul Richardson as he organises the supermarket purchasing and donation drop-off.
If you have a few spare dollars this Christmas you may also wish to buy a quality (yet inexpensive) toy targeted atgirls and boysup to12yo for donation to needy children via the Salvation Army. All UNWRAPPED gifts should also be provided to Paul to facilitate the giving.
Fundraising (and fun) opportunity for Club members - Semaphore Carousel
The Rotary Club of Henley Beach has taken over the running of the children's Rotary Carousel on the beautiful Semaphore beachfront. Clubs are being asked to staff a roster during the weekday summer months for three shifts - morning, afternoon, evening - around 4 hours each shift. For every one of our members who completes their shift, our Club benefits at a minimum of $15 per hour (based on the takings of the 90 shifts period). This not-for-profit fundraiser will only have monies distributed to Rotary and other charity groups. This wonderful opportunity to be part of the enjoyment of children ina safe environment is a project that is lots of fun and available for all Club Members and Friends of Rotary. Currently, the Carousel is undergoing maintenance and the horses are being re-painted so that it'll look lovely when it opens in late November or early December. President of Henley Beach Club Anthony Masson will work out a roster system similar to the Royal Adelaide Show's Yellow Brick Road fundraiser - so it'll be easy to book into a timeslot. Two people staff each session - one who is knowlegeable about the Carousel and an assistant (which will be our role). We had a great response to this potentialfundraiser last Thursday with about 11 hands going up with those who wanted to be part of this summer fundraising effort. Thanks for your support. A separate email with all the details is being emailed out to all members this week.
Moore Street Centre - bread run
Bob and Helen Angove have been the heart and soul of the Moore Street Centre's bread runfor more years that I can count. With a crew of volunteers, each Sunday night they pick up the leftover bread and cakes from Baker's Delight in the North Adelaide Shopping Centre and drop the bread off at the Moore Street Centre in the city and any cakes etc are dropped of at Ronald McDonald House in Melbourne Street, North Adelaide. Due to Bob's illness and Helen's need to look after Bob, they can no longer organise the bread run - although its good news that Helen's son David will still be available to help.
After requesting a volunteer to manage the Bread Run, our newest member Vinda Kong has offered to coordinate the Bread Run roster and become involved in this worthwhile giving project. Our thanks Vinda for your commitment to this long-running Club project.
Guest Speaker - Vinda Kong
Our newest member Vinda, 26yo, was born in Australia and is of Cambodian descent. Her inspirational parents suffered under and then fled the dreaded Pol Pot regime through Thailand where they met at a refugee camp and made their home in Australia 30 years ago.
When the political situation calmed down, her parents returned for a few years to Cambodia as an Australian Government sponsored volunteer to help those in need including impromptu child playgroup, providing books and education. Vinda has been to Cambodia about 6 or 7 times and helps her parents in fundraising for this worthy cause. The family also hosts Cambodian students while in Adelaide. The work of her parents inspires Vinda to give her time and efforts to the community.
Vinda's education included gaining two degrees - in law and science (majoring in chemistry), and she has dabbled in teaching English overseas, held a position with Relationships Australia working with Cambodian youth, helped with suicide prevention and worked for a time with politician Lea Stevens (who is also a Rotarian).
Gaining her admission in Law three years after her degree, Vinda soon worked out that her path lay elsewhere so she accepted a position as Field Development officer in Kumon Australia & New Zealand.
This educational program was originally developed by Japanese high school maths teacher Toru Kumon for his son Takeshi who appeared to be lagging behind in his maths studies. Now, Kumon is studied by 4.34 million students worldwide and is the third largest franchise company behind McDonalds and Subway - teaching not only maths but also English - with an emphasis on high level comprehension and joy and habit of reading widely.
Kumon is taught mainly at home using worksheets in a learning space free from distractions, and twice a week students attend a Kuman office for 1:1 encouragement. Kumon is a lerning tool that is supplementary to the school curriculum but in Japan the two happily cohabit the school environment.
Vinda and her family are of Buddhist faith and philosophy which includes the concepts of giving, karma, fulfilment and peace. During her talk Vinda mentioned her grandmother's illness, and is it with sadness that we report that her 81yo grandmother died just days after her talk to us. Our condolences are offered to Vinda and her family

CASH FOR CANS
Yes it is your chance to donate $20.00 to Cash for Cans again.
For the last few years members have donated $20.00 to the Cash for Cans program. The money is used by Theo at the local Hutt Street IGA to purchase goods for the Moore Street Centre. Theo uses his purchasing power to obtain items at a discount and even adds in extra from his own pocket which in effects double the value of your donation.
