Biology Holiday Ornament

DUE: 12/07/16

You will be assembling an original homemade ornament depicting a concept that you have learned in biology. This project is an individual project. (No Partners!!!!) Please refer to the following guidelines when assembling the ornament.

1.  Ornament needs to be no larger than 8 inches in any direction.

2.  Ornament need to depict topics from one the following units: Ecology, Biochemistry, Cytology (Cells structure and/or function), Energy (photosynthesis & cellular respiration), Cell Cycle & Mitosis, Meiosis, Heredity, Genetic, DNA & Protein Synthesis. Any ornaments that depict other topics will not be accepted.

3.  Each ornament must have an ornament hook or loop of ribbon for display in the classroom and must be capable of hanging.

4.  Each ornament must have an index card attached to the hanger that can be removed so the ornament can be hung. The index card outline follows below.

  1. Front of index card in large letters: Full Name and Period
  2. Back of index card: 3 or more complete sentences
  3. 1st sentence: Explain what your ornament is depicting (ex: Displayed on this ornament is a cell undergoing the process of mitosis…)
  4. 2nd sentence: Explain your topic using proper terminology.

(Ex: Protein synthesis is the process where DNA is transcribed into mRNA in the nucleus, then translated into amino acids in the cytoplasm to form a protein on the ribosome that will code for a particular genetic expression.

  1. 3rd sentence: Explain what its purpose is in Biology. (Life)

(Ex: Osmosis is the diffusion of water across the cell membrane to maintain homeostasis)

5.  Suggestions for ornament materials: plastic, Styrofoam, foam, metal, pipe cleaners, wood, cardboard, card stock, etc. If you have questions, ask your teacher!

6.  Ornaments turned in late will be graded as follows: 1 day late -20 points, 2 days late-40 points, any ornaments turn in later than 2 days late will not be accepted. NO ornaments will be accepted after Monday 12/12/16
