Paradise Creek Nature Park Seasonal Ranger

Environmental Education – Seasonal, part-time. Non-profit Elizabeth River Project is looking for Paradise Creek Nature Park’s first Seasonal Park Rangers/environmental educators for its 40-acre urban park, Portsmouth, VA. This is a new position through a grant award from the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. Be a part of educating preK-5th grade students participating in 2-hour field investigations utilizing the park’s 29 acres of forest and wildflower meadows, 11-acre wetland, canoe/kayak launch, 2-miles of walking trails, a wetland lab, pedestrian bridge and wildflower meadow. Work with a team of education rangers led by Chief Ranger Sumoski who will train you to teach Elizabeth River environmental education, sea-level rise, ecology, native plants and animals, water quality testing and more. Learn in-depth about Elizabeth River environmental challenges and solutions while fostering a new generation of river stewards throughout its restoration. Ideal applicants are team players and have a science or recreation background, although diverse backgrounds are welcome. Must be physically able to stand and walk distances over 3-miles in the course of an hour while carrying field trip materials sometimes up to 50 lbs. Experience working with youth preferred. First aid/CPR and kayaking experiences preferred, but not required. We are looking for self-motivated, energetic, people-oriented candidates with strong communication skills, proven reliability, punctual and professional attitudes. Must be enthusiastic about working outdoors. Season is March 20 to June 9. Up to 25 hours per week, weather depending. Typical hours are 8:30-1:30 pm Monday – Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours. Seasonal Rangers must be available to work Monday – Friday during the time listed above. Background check will be required. Must have transportation. This seasonal, outdoor position is $10/hour.
