POSITION: General Manager Sport and Operations

NORMAL HOURS: 40 hours per week

RESPONSIBLE TO: Chief Executive Officer

DIRECT REPORTS: Four

POSITION PURPOSE:

To support the CEO in leading Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti with a clear strategic direction that best positions the Regional Sports Trust to achieve its vision. The General Manager Sport and Operations has responsibility for the operation of a number of key programmes and initiatives delivered by Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti, through the effective leadership of a team of four direct reports.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership

·  Provide effective leadership and strategic direction for four direct reports and the Community Sport team – enabling staff to contribute fully to the vision and direction of Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti.

·  Promote an organisational culture that reflects the values of Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti.

·  Conduct staff performance reviews and identify and plan for professional development opportunities that will benefit staff and raise organisational capability.

·  Work with the CEO to ensure Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti recruits, develops and manages all staff according to best human resource management practice and the organisation’s policies.

Strategic / Relationship Management

·  Support the CEO to manage and enhance relationships with strategic partners, and take a leadership role within identified priority areas as required.

·  Support the CEO to implement for Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti a Māori strategic framework that articulates how the organisation will assist Māori aspirations in sport, recreation and wellbeing, and that will ensure staff understand their obligations in supporting Māori outcomes through their work.

·  Develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide network of appropriate stakeholders and utilise this to progress all initiatives for Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti.

·  Work with stakeholders to consider and develop new initiatives / special projects that align with Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti objectives.

·  Advocate as appropriate on regional physical activity and sport issues.

Planning and Accountability

·  Work with the CEO and team leaders to develop and implement business and operating plans, key performance indicators, and monitoring and accountability requirements.

·  Provide quality written strategic reports to the CEO and Board of Trustees as required.

·  Ensure that appropriate data is collected for all stakeholder reports and submit all required reports in a professional and timely manner.

·  Ensure that Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti has up-to-date operating policies and procedures including but not limited to the areas of administration, office policies, procedures, health and safety, and systems.

·  Lead regular reviews of all operational and human resource policies to ensure these are current and include any changes to legislation or “best practice”.

Financial

·  Ensure effective management of funding applications, contracts and related investment schedules and ensure that agreement terms are integrated into organisational planning.

·  Assist the CEO and team leaders with the preparation and monitoring of budgets and the management of financial risk.

·  Negotiate, with support from the CEO, new contracts and agreements.

·  Be the key support person for the Office Manager in the day-to-day financial management of Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti.

Operational Administration

·  Implement improvements to the operation of Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti to allow the organisation to perform things more efficiently.

·  Ensure appropriate systems and equipment is in place to enable staff to meet their contractual targets and strategic outcomes.

·  Ensure that all systems and equipment that are provided are well maintained and fit-for-purpose and ensure the effective, efficient and safe operation of Sports House.

·  Oversee that all office administration support functions (e.g. reception, secretarial support, Board administration etc.) are provided effectively.

General

·  Be a community role model for leading an active and healthy lifestyle.

·  Provide assistance at key Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti events.

·  Ensure all communications convey a strong and positive image of Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti – and support the organisation’s key messages.

·  Any other task as reasonably required by Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti, in particular by the CEO.

Desired Competencies / Attributes

·  Strong leadership experience with an inclusive leadership style.

·  Excellent communication skills that includes the confidence to present to large groups of people.

·  A genuine passion for the power of sport and physical activity.

·  Experience working within the Sport and Recreation, Health or Education sector.

·  Strategic agility.

·  Fundraising experience.

·  An understanding of the not-for-profit sector.

·  Is available for work outside normal working hours on occasion.

·  A relevant qualification.
