Educational Program / Unique Career Paths in Coding
Thefollowing panel of coding professionals shared their unique career paths in the coding field:
Lynda Webb, Decision Support Analyst, Dean Health System
Brooke Haycraft, Medical Coding Analyst, Physicians Plus Insurance Corporation
Kathy Sellnow, Medical Policy Analyst, Dean Health Plan
Peggy Soehnlein, Clinic Manager, UW Dept of Family Medicine, Belleville Family Medical Clinic
Lynda talked about some of the data analysis projects she’s worked onincluding a recent project to determine how much time primary care physicians should spend in the clinic providing face/face service while balancing the increased time spent on electronic communication with patients. Brooke described working on denials, appeals, and physician audits; she emphasized the need for payers and providers to work together. Kathy described some of the issues she’s worked on including development of policies for new procedures such as percutaneous pulmonary valve replacement and development of policies geared around health care reform legislation. Peggy described her role as clinic manager; she furthered her education by graduating from the Medical Coding Specialist Program in order to fully understand the impact of coding in the clinic setting.
All the speakers shared their enthusiasm for the coding profession and their careers. The audience was very receptive and interactive.

New MAC-AAPC members and newly credentialed members were recognized.
Members were encouraged to volunteer to serve on committees or to assist with the CPC Exam Review Programs.
Finance Committee: Janet Gibson reported that the Finance Committee will meet on January 17, 2013 to work on the 2013 budget.
Scholarship Committee: David Ennis reported that scholarship funds are available for professional development. He reminded members of the AAPC national conference in Orlando, FL, April 14-17. Information and forms are available on the MAC-AAPC website.
CPC Exam Review Program Committee: Loretta announced an organizational meeting will take place soon. Members interested in assisting should contact Loretta. Review Programs are set for April 13 & 20 at the UWHC Administrative Office Building and November 2 & 9 at Dean Health Plan. AAPC certification exam dates are scheduled for March 9, June 8, September 14, and December 14.
Education Committee: Katie Reynolds stated the committee will be meeting soon to plan for 2013 meetings. Topics for upcoming meetings were announced:
February 14 – Autism – not yet confirmed
March 14 – Liver Transplantation – Jess Weber, RN
The meeting concluded by drawing for multiple door prizes.
Miscellaneous Info / 2.0 continuing education units were awarded by AAPC.
