Position: Vice President (Competitions)

Ticket: SHINE

My name is Jack Collins and I nominating myself for the position of Vice-President (Competitions) on the executive ticket ‘SHINE’. I act with full support for the entire ‘SHINE’ executive ticket and have the utmost faith in our presidential candidate, Katherine Shliapnikoff.

In 2017, I served on the UTS Law Students’ Society as the Intervarsity Competitions Director and throughout my tenure, I hosted and organised competitions on a statewide, national and international scale. In order to this, I liaised consistently with other law students’ societies and sponsors so as to ensure that these competitions ran as effectively and efficiently as possible. Further, in 2017 I successfully introduced the UTS LSS Intervarsity Legal Technology Law Moot and was privy to the organisation of a variety of new initiatives that were offered to UTS Law students, including the Herbert Smith Freehills-National Law University Delhi International Negotiation Competition.

Moreover, my own experience with student competitions enables me to empathise with competitors in that I truly understand what is expected of those within the Competitions portfolio. Specifically, I have been heavily involved with both the Negotiation and Mooting programs, having reached Grand Finals in each of these competitions. Further, I have acted as a volunteer student judge for our internal Negotiation competitions, whilst I also wrote the problem question that was used for the SCLSS Intervarsity Negotiation Competition.

As to 2018, my main priority for the year is to preserve the high standard of competitions that has been observed throughout previous tenures. To do so requires consistent commitment and I am confident that I have the work ethic and drive to deliver this to the UTS Law cohort. Furthermore,I hope to provide students with greater opportunities to be judged by experienced legal practitioners so as to allow for heightened development of practical legal skills.
