2.1.1 / Title of the project. Give a brief description of project / SRISHTI – Boxma High School
A tribal High School project in Sambalpur District of
Orissa State
2.1.2 / Vision and Mission of Project / To provide Value Based Education so as to face the challenges in life.
2.1.3 / Name of contact person / Sri Swami Om
President & Managing Trustee
2.1.4 / Address of contact person / SRISHTI DHAM, Village – Boxma,
P O Kuchinda – 7682222, Dist Sambalpur
Orissa State, India
2.2 / Short Term Goals: Please explain in detail, what you expect to achieve through this project in the next 6 months through 1 year. (Add additional sheets if necessary)
As there are no high schools nearby in our Gram Panchayat especially for Girl Child, SRISHTI organised a Tribal High School in the village. Our children have to reach school from far away villages crossing rivers, and reserve forest area due to lack of any transportation facilities.
During lunch break our school children study without proper meal, as their parents cannot afford to provide meals regularly. Also, our school infrastructure is in bad shape because we do not have enough resources to repair & maintain these in good conditions. In fact, our Ashram finds it very difficult to run our Ashram High School for the tribal children, as we are never sure about the quantum of the resources we will be able to raise.
Our Ashram High School teachers & staff are not receiving any salary for the last fifteen years from the State Government as it is yet to sanction the grants in aid despite the fact, that the school has received all necessary recognition from the government and is being run for the 15 years as per State Service Rules. Hence, SRISHTI has to raise funds every year from general public for running our village Tribal High School.
2.3 / Long Term Goal: Please explain in detail what are your long term goals from this project? (Add additional sheets if necessary)
The geographical area where SRISHTI’s welfare activities are being undertaken for the last two decades are in Kuchinda sub division of Sambalpur district, Orissa State. The area is predominantly a tribal populated (about 80%) area, consisting of KISSAN, MUNDA and ORAM Tribes.
The village is located inside the reserve forest area and most of the Tribals livelihood depends on agriculture and forest products. As per our survey in Kuchinda Sub Division Poverty and Superstition among the tribal population is due to ignorance and lack of proper education.
Malaria, Tuberculosis and Leprosy is rampant among these tribal population due to malnutrition and lack of proper hygiene. Everyday there is a death due to Cerebral Malaria in this area.
SRISHTI believes that through proper education and awareness among the tribal population, most of the social problems like Primary Health, Hygiene and Malnutrition can be improved in our villages. As long as tribal children are denied the right to education, primary health facilities, clean drinking water and sanitation, till then the tribal villages of Orissa can not be empowered.
SRISHTI’s vision is to provide compulsory education for all the rural / tribal children through information technology at every level of the society. SRISHTI intends to ensure that every child in rural areas of Orissa gets the right to Water, Food, Health and Education.
True education encompasses many areas related to the harmonious development of the Head, Heart and Hands. SRISHTI believes that education for the rural children has more to do with assimilation of ideas and strengthening of mind, expand the intellect and enabling one to stand on one’s own feet to face the reality of life.
2.4 / Project Activities: Please describe in detail the various activities that need to be carried out to successfully complete the project. This should include but not limited to the following.
Roles and responsibilities of various people in the project.
Please include any infrastructure costs that need to be incurred. Also include their purpose, location etc.
If any infrastructure costs (land, vehicles etc.) to be incurred, please include details such as the location, purpose etc.
Description of various awareness methods used (print material, projection slides etc.)
Miscellaneous Materials that needs to be procured.
SRISHTI does have a regular Parent Teachers Association meeting in the village in order to discuss the educational problems faced in organising our Ashram High School.
The village school committee does monitor the regular activities of the school & looks after the repairs & maintenance of the Ashram High School.
Parents are given the responsibility to see that their children are attending the school regularly and not to engage them doing domestic work. Thus the school attendance is taken care of.
Presently our Ashram High School requires a Science Laboratory, Library and Computer besides other Audio Visual Teaching Materials.
2.5 / Project Sustainability and Evaluation
2.5.1 / How do you propose to measure the effectiveness of the project? Please specify and detail any clear or quantifiable yardsticks.
Basically the Tribal populations in our area cannot afford Higher Education facilities for their children due to poverty. Our Ashram High School gives an opportunity for these tribal children to finish higher studies and to avail some decent jobs.
There are successful cases of tribal girls passing Matriculation Exam and being employed as Police Women, Post Women, Nurses and Teachers from these villages because of educational facilities provided by our Ashram High School.
When we evaluate these achievements we find such results as quantifiable indicator in the socio economic development of the rural tribal villages of Orissa State.
2.5.2 / How does this project affect the children involved, their families and the local community?
This Project benefits the entire Tribal population in the following manner :
-Ensuring that these tribal / girl children do attend the school regularly for a better prospectus.
-Ensuring that these tribal / girl children enroll in high school and do not join the labour work as a minor child labour.
-Ensuring that these tribal / girl children are provided with good health facilities as such health facilities are not available in this area.
In this manner, this project provides quality based education for our tribal / girl children and to instill confidence to face the challenges ahead.
2.5.3 / What plans do you have in place to make the project self sustainable or sustainable with minimum support?
We do not have any income generating assets and as such the project cannot become self sustainable. The area of activities are in the remote tribal villages of Orissa State and the local population being extremely poor is incapable of supporting school project.
Every year ashram depends on some philanthropic organizations or individuals to come forward and support our tribal high school project.
2.5.4 / What factors do you think may affect the sustainability of the project?
We have to continue our Ashram High School at any cost as it is the only High School of the Gram Panchayat. The objective of our Ashram School is primarily the Education, which is the foundation of social, cultural and economic well being of the society.
In our nation building Programme, we think education is the basic requirement for all types of development for a rural based set up.
2.6 / Project Budget (If there is a project budget document that answers all the questions from 2.6.1 to 2.6.9 please attach)
2.6.1 / Total Project Cost / Rs. 7,28,500/-
2.6.2 / Amount self-financed/already available / Rs.1,28,500/-
2.6.3 / Funds requested from Vibha / Rs.4,00,000/-
2.6.4 / Alternate source of funding (if any) / Rs.2,00,000/- will be raised from the local institutions / individual donors
2.6.5 / Will the money be spent for any specific purpose or will it contribute to a general/existing pool of money? / The grant will be exclusively used for Educational purpose only.
2.6.6 / If the answer to the above question is “YES”, detailed breakup of how and when the money will be spent. / Details of breakup and how the grant will be utilized is enclosed. Financial year April, 2006 to March,2007.
2.6.7 / Proposed means of continuing funding beyond the current funding / Although we have to depend on some philanthropic organization or individual persons to support our Education Programme, we have been running it successfully for almost 15 years. We intend to continue it at any cost.

2.6.9 / Number of Volunteers involved (both paid and unpaid) / All teachers and school staff of the area are volunteers from the community. Although govt grant is still not available, they are paid salary on a monthly basis from the resources that we raise.
