The risk of suicide can be decreased if those closest to the individual in crisis recognize the warning signs and know how to help. That’s why everyone - friends, family members, coworkers, teachers, everyone - needs to know suicide warning signs and basic intervention steps. In as little as one hour, QPR Gatekeeper training can teach anyone the steps to help save a life from suicide.This Gatekeeper Instructor program makes basic suicide prevention skills easy to learn and easy to teach in your school, agency, or community.
In thisQPR Certified Gatekeeper Instructor Training, participants will:
- Be trained to teach QPR to a variety of audiences. Learn topresent material, facilitate role plays of interventions and referrals, and handle questions from the audience.
- Understand the nature, range and importance of suicidal communications and their importance in preventing suicide.
- Review and understand the groups at greatest risk of suicide and why QPR can work for them.
- Gain a historical perspective of suicide prevention and how QPR fits into national efforts.
- Learn how to effectively promote suicide prevention in their own communities.
- Gain the competence and confidence to teach others how to save lives and help prevent suicidal behaviors.
This Three-YearCertification Program includes:
- A full-day training course
- A QPR Instructor's Manual including:
- Detailed instructions for presenting QPR
- QPR Instructor's Teaching CD with suicidal communications vignettes, suicide statistics, QPR introductory video hosted by Carrie Fisher, PowerPoint slides for the core QPR Gatekeeper training, and overhead masters for handouts
- Audio CD of a QPR Gatekeeper training
- 25 QPR booklets and QPR wallet cards
- Tool kit (continuously updated) with information on issues related to suicide
- Two of Dr. Quinnett's books:
- Suicide: The Forever Decision
- Counseling Suicidal People: A Therapy of Hope
- Access to QPRI's toll free number for consultations on QPR training
- QPR Times, a newsletter created for QPR Certified Gatekeeper Instructors

Scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis to those who live and/or work in Columbia County, Wisconsin (one scholarship per agency/organization). The QPR Gatekeeper Instructor Certification includes aQPR manual and materials, three-year certification and training, continental breakfast, lunch, and refreshments: $395.00. Please make your check payable to “CWCAC” (Central Wisconsin Community Action Council, Inc.) and send it along with this completed registration form to: Prevent Suicide Columbia County, c/o CWCAC, Sara Jesse, P.O. Box 430, Wisconsin Dells, WI 53965. Scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis to those who live and/or work in Columbia County, WI (one scholarship per agency/organization). Scholarship recipients are expected to provide QPR Gatekeeper Training sessions after completing this certification course. Registration and payment must be received by March 25, 2014.
