Tennis Player Rating Form

Any athlete regardless of their standard can enjoy the opportunity to compete. The competition structure uses this rating form to assess a player's tennis ability rather than their disability.

The Tennis Player Rating Form is the best means for a coach to test a player's skill level. It can determine what level of tennis a player should practice during a coaching session, what court size they use, what ball they use as well as measuring progress and providing incentives for personal growth. Before a competition, players must also be rated (normally by their coaches) using this form.

When assessing, it is best practice to do this twice to get a more accurate rating:

1.  Coach feeding or rallying with individual (make sure they are challenged in order to see their limitations)

2.  In a short match play situation (as this is often where a player’s weaknesses are seen and leads to a more accurate rating of their competing level of play)

In competitions of only one or a few days, divisions* are normally decided using these ratings together with previous competition results and knowledge of players. At larger competitions, the ratings can be used to preliminary division the players followed by them playing short matches before deciding on the divisions* for final competition.

*Divisions are where players with similar levels of ability are grouped together to give them an achievable and positive match play experience.

Coaches are also advised to read the ‘Tennis Coaching & Competition update’ on the Special Olympics GB website before completing this form.
