On February 4, 2010, Javen and I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Mr. Stephen Reelitz. We were able to learn more about what Mr. Reelitz does as a part of the Kamehameha Schools staff, how he uses math in his job, and more about himself in general. I would like to take this opportunity to give a big mahalo to Stephen Reelitz. Mahalo Nui Loa for the wonderful learning opportunity, and the chance to get to know you a little more better. Mahalo Nui Loa!!

Question: What school(s) did you attend?

Answer: Mr. Reelitz attended Kamehameha Schools (class of 1973) in high school. In college, he attended the University of Hawaii, both Hilo and Manoa.

Question: What was your favorite subject when you were an eighth grader?

Answer: When Stephen was in the eighth grade, his favorite subject was science. At the time, in science, he was studying planets, and solar systems. That was a subject of interest while Stephen was in eighth grade.

Question: What are some of the responsibilities you have in your position?

Answer: Mr. Reelitz works with resource centers in Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, and Moloka‘i. In his work, he helps to support families. He also helps with the Admissions applications. In his field of work, he also helps to support programs for Kamehameha, like the explorations program and koa reforestation. He also helps with the lunches for field trips and transportation. Although communications can be hard, and work may get stressful at times, he still loves working for Kamehameha Schools.

Question: Please give me a couple of examples of the math you use in your work.

Answer: Stephen Reelitz has to budget and know all about the koa project. In the koa project, he needs to figure out how many trees are needed, and how many people volunteer. His office also runs statistics of how many people call his office.

Question: What kind of advice would you give to students in the eighth grade?

Answer: Stephen says, “Don’t stress, it’s very simple and be willing to explore new things.”

Question: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Answer: In his free time, Stephen likes to read, but often times, he falls asleep while doing so. He also enjoys watching volleyball, and he volunteers in the community.

Question: What is your favorite sport?

Answer: Mr. Reelitz enjoys soccer and volleyball. Soccer is his favorite outdoor sport and volleyball is his favorite indoor sport. He likes seeing the different strategies involved with each sport.
