Reoccurring M/C GoJSafety Inspection Steps (251 CC and Above)

Government of Japan(GoJ) requires all motorcycles registered in Okinawa with an engine displacement 251cc and above to go through a safety inspection every two years. The GoJ safety inspection on your M/C can be completed as early as 30 days prior to the current expiration date. (For M/C of 249.9 and smallerthe Marine Corpsrequires an annual safety inspection every year)

Requirements:

  1. Japanese Compulsory Insurance (JCI) with at least 25 months coverage.
  2. Property Damage Insurance (PDI)
  3. Road Tax Receipt
  4. Base Registration (DD430)
  5. Motorcycle Title
  6. Recycle ticket (if available)
  7. Odometer reading or mileage
  8. SOFA ID and SOFA motorcycle license

Steps:

  1. Go to your insurance company and update your Japanese Compulsory Insurance (JCI) policy to meet the 25 month requirement for GoJ safety inspection.
  2. If your GoJsafety inspection is expired, you have to apply for temporary GoJ plates at the Joint Service Vehicle Registration Office (JSVRO) information counter. You will then pay ¥1,500 at the Automobile License Plate Association (ALPA) counter for the rental. The plates can only be picked up after 0900 on the following business day after ordered and is good for three days only(includes Japanese and US holidays). You must return the temporary tags with the driving permit (green sheet) right after you the completion of inspection or the expiration date of the tags and if needed, you will have to order another temporary plate to finish the process.
  3. Bring M/C with all the required documents inside theJSVRO. Proceed to the ALPA counter to pay for your weight tax (¥ 4,900).
  4. Once you pay weight tax, you will walk to Door 6 behind JSVRO on the left side near the vehicle entrance of the inspection lane and pay $8.50 AAFES inspection fee. Then drive the motorcycle to lane 5 for the actual inspection.
  5. If you fail your inspection, you have to fix all of the identified items. If you are able to have all items repaired and re-inspected on the same day, there will be no additional fees. However, if you do not return the same day you will be required to pay ¥1,300 re-inspection fee at the ALPA counter before proceeding through the inspection area again. If repairs take longer than two weeks, the re-inspection fee goes up to ¥1700 and an additional $8.50 AAFES fee will be paid again.
  6. If you pass the inspection, you will be directed to lanes 3 or 4 to see the GoJfinal inspector.
  7. Come back insideJSVRO and proceed to the SOFA UpdateCounter to update your motorcycle registration. Return the temporary plates and receive a new Base Registration (DD430).
