The 4th KOSTAT-UNFPA Summer Seminar on Population

The Summer Seminar on Population provides a forum for discussions on population and a set of useful demographic tools to participants from across the globe.To this end, three consecutive individual workshops will take place with specific emphasis on “Aging and NTA”, “Demography with R”, and “Migration Analysis”during the 4th KOSTAT-UNFPA Summer Seminar on Population.

The workshops will provide an opportunity for demographical experts, government officials, and graduate students to learn innovative methods for producing and analyzing population statistics and demographical information. Hence, the seminar serves as a platform to foster experts on population statistics and contribute to each population statistical offices’ capabilities.All participants are encouraged to select one or more workshops among the three workshops stated below. The working language of all three workshops is English.

Workshop themes for 2017 are as follows:

1.  Aging and NTA
July 23 – July 29 / Statistics Training Institute, Daejeon
Introduction of National Transfer Accounts (NTA) and basic frameworks to construct the accounts,
Estimating the age profiles and other various hands-on exercises.

2.  Demography with R
July 30 – August 5 / Crown Harbor Hotel, Busan
Introduction of ‘R’ and R environment to efficiently handle data,
Hands-on exercises on popular R packages for importing, manipulating, and visualising data,
Writing R functions to speed up repetitive tasks and displaying results in interactive plots.

3.  Migration Analysis
August 6 – August 12 / Ocloud Hotel, Seoul
Understanding causes and consequences of migration, Overcoming measurement and data limitations,
Migration in context of population change and urbanization, Providing robust predictions of future movements

How to apply:

Participants should have a statistical or demographical background.All three workshops are open to up to 25 participants who are proficient in English and eligible for training in the workshops.

Tuition is free, but participants will need to support their own travel, meals, lodging, and other activities in Korea. All prospective applicants are advised to seek funding from their home organizations or national/international agencies. However, the APPI will provide free accommodation and meals for up to 10 full-time graduate students in each workshop on a selective basis.

Application forms should be submitted through the on-line application system on the APPI website or by sending completed registration forms to later than June 23, 2017.

Registration Cancellation is available without penalty when the request is made by 18:00, July 14, 2017 (Korean time basis).
