Nuclear Medicine
PATHFINDER FOR………………..
PURPOSE
This pathfinder is an aid for accessing print and electronic resources to conduct research. The entries are examples of some quality resources. To obtain additional information, refer to the search strategies suggested below for using the library catalog and the online sites.
General and specialized encyclopedias provide a brief overview of a topic. Specialized works, such as subject-specific encyclopedias, dictionaries and handbooks provide more extensive information and are included in the CredoReference and E-Reference Books databases.
Encyclopedia Britannica
Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia
Encyclopedia Americana
CredoReference
A collection of over 500 reference books in all subjects.
E-Reference Books
Over 100 subject encyclopedias, handbooks and dictionaries.
All of the above are available from the HOME page of the library’s catalog (https.lcnelibrary.follettdestiny.com).
Search Strategies
Search Syntax
Boolean operators – use AND to find two or more search term(s) in query (narrows search)
Example: imaging AND cholecystitis
use OR to find either or both search terms(s) in query (broadens search)
Example: radiopharmaceutical OR radiotracer
use NOT to exclude search term(s) in query (limits search)
Example: PET NOT animals
Phrase search – use double quotation marks to find search terms in exact order
Example: “nuclear medicine”
Subject search: When a relevant document is found in the library’s catalog or in a periodical database, the bibliographic record will show subject terms that are used to describe the document. Use of these terms will enable you to further target your search for similar documents.
Example: A search for tires AND recycling in the library catalog produces documents with the subject headings WASTE TIRES—MANAGEMENT and RECYCLING (WASTE, ETC.). The first of these is fairly specific, while the second is a broader term.
NOTE that some search engines, such as Google, use AND as the default operator if none is specified. In addition, Google and some others use a plus sign (+) instead of AND, and a hyphen or minus sign (-) instead of NOT. When in doubt, look for a help screen or an “advanced search” option.

· Library databases can be accessed through the home tab of the library’s catalog. Required usernames and passwords are shown at the end of this guide.
· The most comprehensive databases are Academic Search Premier and ProQuest Central. iCONN is a suite of databases provided by the State to all residents of Connecticut. The most comprehensive of these is Academic OneFile. A more specialized database for this field of study is CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature.
· eBrary is a database of electronic books in all disciplines.
