Welcome! I am sure you are looking forward to a successful year. Below is a list of guidelines for success in my class. Please read it carefully and keep this copy in your notebook for reference.

q  Expectations

·  Respect other people and their property.

·  Be on time and prepared for class.

·  Participate.

q  Quarterly Exam

·  All students will be required to take a Quarterly exam at the conclusion of each marking period. This exam will count as 20% of each marking period grade.

q  What you will need in class everyday

·  A one-inch, three-ring binder to be used as a notebook for this class only.

·  A good supply of blank loose-leaf paper.

·  Two pencils or pens. Pencils with erasers are recommended, especially for taking tests.

q  What you will need at home

·  Access to the online Algebra 1 textbook:

Go to:my.hrw.com Username: asouth65 Password: n9v4e

(if no online access, students may access the website during advisory)

·  A basic calculator such as the one included in the Windows operating system will be enough for homework assignments. However, I have a set of TI-83Plus graphing calculators, which will be used during class. For extra practice at home and for taking standardized tests such as the SAT, I would recommend purchasing a graphing calculator (anything in the TI-83 or TI-84 family of calculators).

q  Grading

Grades are based on quarterly exams (20%), tests/quizzes/projects (60%), homework (15%), and class participation (5%). Tests are weighted twice as much as quizzes.

q  Class Policies

·  Homework is not optional. It is expected to be done neatly, completely, and on time for full credit.

·  Absence is not an excuse for missing work. Students are responsible for making up all work after an absence as soon as possible (allow one day for each day missed).

·  Lateness to class will result in a detention the following day.

·  All school rules stated in the student handbook will be enforced.

q  Extra Help

Extra help will be available during midday office hours. If you are having trouble in class, don’t wait too long to come for help. Block 3 on A days (room 138)
