KIT LIST FOR CROATIA

Footwear:Waterproofed walking boots with a deep tread. Should be 'broken-in'. Other shoes are unsatisfactory for hiking or fieldwork. Neoprene boots can be provided for canoeing/kayaking. Sandals (not flip flops) for beach / swimming activity.

Clothing: The weather in summer is generally hot and dry and pleasantly sunny and warm in the Spring (from beginning of April) and Autumn (to the end of October). Summer on the coast can be extremely hot (up to 35C) one day but, if the Bura blows, the temperature can quickly drop to 15~20C or as low as 12C further inland. Be prepared for showers. Thin layers allow you to adapt more easily to temperature fluctuations rather than one thick ones. Quick drying, wicking material is recommended for wearing next to the skin. Long trousers and long sleeved shirts are necessary during field work for protection from bugs, ticks, nettles etc.

NB Tick borne encephalitis (TBE) can occur (mainly April-July) and wearing appropriate dress is an important preventative measure. Precautions include:
1) Wearing light coloured clothing so that ticks can be seen more easily and removed before becoming attached.
2) Wearing long sleeved shirts and trousers tucked into socks or boots.
3) Applying insect repellent to clothes, camping gear and exposed skin.

Weight: Remember your airline luggage weight limit and be aware of any carry on restrictions.

Passport: (valid for duration of stay).
