Student/Parent Guide to The City & Guilds NVQ Level 2 Hair Apprenticeship

The King John School offers a wide curriculum of academic and vocational courses within the sixth form. It has recently obtained accreditation for Hair apprenticeships with City & Guilds. We have adopted a flexible approach to learning and are adapting to the ever changing economy.

The King John School have a successful Hair Department along with a reputation for teaching excellence. We offer a high quality delivery and assessment programme. The in-house tutor will also be the assessor and will regularly visit your organisation, hence, building a strong link with you and your apprentice.

Training:

·  The Government will pay the training costs for all apprentices aged

16-18 years

·  A proportion of the full training cost is received for apprentices aged between 19-24 years and a contribution will be required from the employer, by negotiation with The King John School

·  For Apprentices aged over 25 years, the full training cost would be required

Wages:

·  The Government has set the minimum apprentice wage at £2.73 per hour (£3.30 from October 2015). The apprentice will spend 4 days in the workplace and 1 day in College

What qualifications will be achieved?

The Apprenticeship: An NVQ Level 2 in Hair

Functional Skills / GCSE Level ½ in Maths, and English

The Advanced Apprenticeship: An NVQ Level 3 in Hair

Functional Skills at Level 2 in Maths and English

When does the apprenticeship start and how long is it for?

The Apprenticeship: August/September

The course is for two years for the NVQ Level 2.

The Advanced Apprenticeship: Apprentices will transfer onto Level 3 once they have completed Level 2.

Entry requirements

The Apprenticeship: A minimum of 2 GCSE’s at D grade. Entry onto the course is subject to a test and an interview.

The Advanced Apprenticeship: Able to demonstrate at least one of the following:

·  A suitable Level of competence within a relevant job

·  Have successfully completed the Level 2 apprenticeship in Hair

·  Have a minimum of 5 G.C.S.E’s at grade C

Hairdressing facts

There are 8 mandatory units:

·  Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety

·  Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation

·  Advise and consult with clients

·  Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp

·  Change hair colour

·  Style and finish hair

·  Set and dress hair

·  Cut hair using basic techniques

You are also required to take a number of optional units, depending on size, from:

·  Fulfil salon reception duties

·  Promote additional services or products to clients

·  Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work

·  Plait and twist hair

·  Perm and neutralise hair

·  Attach hair to enhance style.
