Dear Honors Parents and Students:

Like other high schools in the Moreno Valley Unified School District, Canyon Springs has a summer reading requirement. Reading core selection(s) (works read by all students, regular and Honors) will create free time to allow Honors students to pursue more advanced work. This also allows Honors teachers to better assess the textual analysis and writing skills of students entering the course.

Therefore, please choose the appropriate work(s) from the list below. In some cases, you may to download or purchase a copy of the assigned work(s), but students may check out books from the CSHS library during the week of June 12th – June 16th. Your student may also check out the book during fall registration; however, we suggest checking the book out before the end of the current school year in order to provide more time for reading.

In order to get off to a good start, it’s important that students accomplish this task during the coming summer. In addition to the reading, there is a required assignment that students must complete over the summer, ideally as they read the selection(s). These assignments will be collected and assessed during the first weeks of the upcoming school year. You will find the assignment details below. Assignment instructions will be handed out in the current English class along with this letter. Additional copies will be available in the library and will also be available online at canyonsprings.mvusd.net. There will be additional assignments and an exam over the text given in class during the first weeks of school. If you have a question, please feel free to contact one of the department co-chairs, Alison Hofer-Caccam and Deborah Saravia.

The required selections:

Course / Reading Selection(s) / Assignments
English I Honors (incoming ninth graders)
*Text available for checkout in the CSHS library / Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck / Dialectical Journal
Reading Analysis Guide
English II Honors (next year’s sophomores)

Invitation by Sylvia Plath / Theme Responses
English III Honors (next year’s juniors)
*Text available for checkout in the CSHS library / Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain / Dialectical Journal

On the back of this letter, you will find the Advanced Placement summer reading requirements. You may find this of interest as a preview of what is to come as you progress in your English Honors/AP education at Canyon Springs. We hope this experience will enrich the coming summer.

Sincerely,

Alison Hofer-CaccamDeborah Saravia
